The Sheridan National Guard was organized on July 1, 1907. The original members were five men from Sheridan, Wyoming and a sergeant. They were called to active duty in the Spanish-American War and their first assignment was to the guard at Manila Bay. The next year they were sent to Cuba as part of the American Expeditionary Force and served until the end of World War I. In 1919 they consisted of 100 men and formed a battalion in order to serve in the Great Depression. They again enlisted for World War II but did not go into combat. On September 15, 1951, the National Guard Armory opened its doors to everyone in Sheridan when it became an armory for the entire state of Wyoming. This event is significant because it marked the first time that anyone from outside Sheridan had access to this important facility.

The Sheridan National Guard was formed on September 13, 1894. The unit was originally called the "Sheridan Guards" and served in the Wyoming Territorial Militia. The Sheridan National Guard became an infantry regiment on October 1, 1898. On November 15, 1899, the regiment was redesignated as the 8th Infantry Regiment and served in World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Force. From 1919 to 1924, the regiment underwent a series of changes and re-designations before becoming again known as 8th Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1924. The regiment continued to serve in World War II until it wasactivated on August 22, 1945 as part of the United States Army European Theater of Operations. The regiment remained inactive until it was reactivated on December 12, 1949 at Fort Carson, Colorado as part of United States Army Ninth Corps. The brigade has since been redesignated once more - this time as 9th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (9IBCT)
