In 1886, Otto Joininger and his father-in-law started up the first known coffee roaster in Sheridan. The Joiningers would continue to roast coffee for local residents until 1971, when they passed away. The Sheridan Coffee Company began production in 1924 by David Jaffe and his family. It was eventually bought by the Hansen's Coffee Company in 1949. Hansen's ran the company until it merged with Peet's Coffee Corporation in 1984. After that point, Sheridan Coffee continued to be produced under various names including McDowell espresso beans from 1988-1993 before being rechristened "Sheridan Creek Roasters" in 1995 by founder Rick McIver. Today, there are three Sheridans running artisan coffee businesses: Koffee Klatch Café & Cafe (owned and operated by Rick McIver), Green Ark Roastery & Gourmet Shop (owned and operated by Curtis Adams), and The Beanpot Café (owned and operated by Jason Freeman). The city's industries included transportation (the Sheridan-based Great Northern Railway), retail trade (Bamberger's grocery store and other businesses), information technology (an Apple Macintosh computer company founded by three friends who met while working for Bamberger), and service providers like fire departments and ambulances. Many of these businesses are still operating today; for example Bamberger's has been reopened as a restaurant/bar with live music every night since 2007. In total, Sheridan has lost over one-third of its jobs between 2000 and 2010 because of outsourcing by local companies such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure that replaced traditional jobs within the City government or within business districts like those around restaurants and other services sector businesses where employment had grown increasingly difficult to find due to competition from out-of-town firms or new technologies like cloud computing that made old physical locations less attractive to employers looking for creative minds on call 24/7
