Rock Springs is a small town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It lies on the North Platte River and is west of the city of Cheyenne. The first settlers in what would become Rock Springs were cattlemen who arrived from Nebraska in 1876. They named their new community for General George Armstrong Custer's forces that had fought against Sioux warriors at the Battle of Little Bighorn four years earlier. Maynard and others who came to homestead land around the bend in the North Platte River near present-day Rocks Spring Elementary School and Parkview Middle School. In 1902, Jens Salomon opened a grocery store and restaurant in Rock Springs which became an integral part of local life. In 1978, businessman Don Kapp donated land to make an airport available for Rock Springs Airport which has since been renamed after him – Don Kapp Airport. In 2002, Rock Springs was selected as one of twenty towns located along Interstate 80 (I-80) between Colorado and Nebraska that will be receiving $10 million to help them improve infrastructure and stimulate economic development through grant programs administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This investment will create more than 100 jobs including 50 construction jobs during initialphase; with full production planned for 2013! A recent addition to the community are two new elementary schools - Rockspring Elementary School & Parkview Middle School have opened their doors this fall!
