After the war, many of these men returned to their home states and formed companies of their own. These units would serve in local militias during the early years of Wyoming Territory. In 1887, a group of businessmen led by Jepson Waddell founded the Wyoming National Guard and placed an order for 1,500 rifles from Samuel Colt’s company. The first shipment arrived in Rock Springs on July 4th, 1887. For many years, Rock Springs served as a center for arms sales and training for national guard units based out of Cheyenne and Laramie. In 1907,Rock Springs became part of Douglas County and changed its name to Rock Springs Army Depot Museum (RSSM). Rock Springs, Wyoming is a small town located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheridan, Wyo.–Broomfield, and Grand Teton metropolitan areas. The springs that make up Rock Springs were first discovered in 1868 by George Hinkle while searching for coal near Pinedale. The original settlers of Rock Springs were the Lewis family who named their settlement after General James A. Ferguson who fought in the Mexican–American War and was an early settler in what is now Sheridan County. When Coal Creek Railroad arrived to transport coal from Laramie to Chicago in 1875 it brought new settlers with it and many of them founded businesses around the springs such as a grocery store, post office, hotel and schoolhouse. In 1901 a sawmill was built on Spring Creek by J.M. McDonald which produced lumber until it burned down in 1957; this led to the founding of Rock Springs Park which still contains parts of the mill building today. Today there are several businesses that keep things running including a barbershop/beauty salon, gas station/convenience store, restaurant and convenience store as well as two churches – First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and United Methodist Church (founded 1912). There are also several acres within Rock Springs Park where people can take walks or play dodgeball or football; there is also a playground as well as two basketball courts and two baseball diamonds; additionally there are three soccer pitches among other amenities for kids including one with a climbing wall! Rock Springs has beenaround since 1868 when General James A. Ferguson settled hereabouts after fleeing Mexico during its war with Texas; he named his community "Ferguson" after General Ferguson's home state Kansas Territory - henceforth known as Sheridan County! The Lewis family continued to live here until 1911 when they sold their holdings to J P McMahon Jr.; McMahon later donated land for development west of town along Spring Creek called "McMahon Place". Today Rock Springs features several restaurants including White Sands BBQ & Pub which opened its doors on Valentine's Day 2009; additionally Happy Trails Brewing Company has opened up shop just off I-25 south of town providing local beer lovers with some great beers!

The town slowly declined until it was destroyed by fire in 1902. Today, only a few traces remain of Rock Springs’ once flourishing community. One is the remains of the original Mormon settlement which can be seen northeast of town on an open field. Another reminder of Rock Springs’ past is an interpretive sign located near Interstate 80 that tells about its history and cultural significance.
