Rock Springs is a small town located in the U.S. state of Wyoming, east of the Laramie Range and north of the North Platte River. The population was 1,670 at the 2010 census. Rock Springs is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Laramie–Cheyenne–Arapaho metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit the area were fur traders in the 18th century and early 19th century. The first permanent settler was John Fetterman in 1855. In 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters at Rock Springs and scheduled military parades there as part of his "March on Washington". In 1865, General Philip Sheridan visited Rock Springs during his campaign against Lt. Col William Tecumseh Sherman's army and ordered all civilian buildings destroyed to intimidate residents into support the Union cause. By 1870, most of what is now Sheridan County had been annexed by Wyoming Territory; Rock Springs remained within that territory until it became a part of Laramie County in 1907. Furst (1868) published an account of a Brulé Indian encampment near Rock Springs which he had seen while camping with guides from Lazard & Company on their trip up the Green River valley in 1867-68. Fort Bridger was built nearby on the north bank of Green River in 1869 to service this new supply line from Fort Bridger on the South Platte River to Black Hills mine supplies arriving via stages through wagon roads over Medicine Bow Pass and downriver to Topeka on July 14, 1869 (). The fort also served as a garrison for local ranchers who used it as grazing land for their sheep and cattle during winter months when bad weather affected travel elsewhere in Wyoming or Nebraska(). A post office was established at Fort Bridger on October 7, 1870 (), but no mail service ever ran due to lack of available transportation southward across Red Mountain Pass into Colorado (). A new stage road from Deadwood crossed Red Mountain Pass near present day Rockspring about two miles west of where it currently meets Interstate 80 () just east of present day Springdale (). Work continued intermittently throughout 1951-1957 despite protests from local citizens who felt they were losing too much valuable property upstream (and potential access channelled away downstream) due to increased irrigation requirements caused by increasing production at nearby Gold King Mine ()); however work finally stopped short due mostly Toeppen Dam construction project upstream)—resulting not only significant loss but also environmental damage downstream including loss/desertification of Snake Fork Canyon ()roundabout—virtually eliminating any chance whatsoever for finding or retrieving any significant amount(s)of gold over time). Despite protestations (& several lawsuits)from locals since 1957 onward,—the dam finally went onlineon November 3rd 1954.—providing final assurance regarding our nation's second largest gold mine’s future development!
