The Riverton Naval Air Station was founded in 1951 as a naval air station on the north shore of the Green River. It served as an auxiliary airfield for the Wyoming National Guard and eventually became an active naval air station. The Navy used Riverton for training pilots, navigators, and other aviation experts from 1951 until its closure in 1972. In 1982, the navy opened a new wing at Riverton which served as the primary training facility for jet aviators operating out of Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado. The Wing operated until 1997 when it was closed due to budget cuts.
