The Riverton Army Depot was established in 1907 as the Wyoming Infantry Armory. It served as the armory for the 7th Cavalry Regiment, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Cavalry Regiment, and 2nd Battalion, 6th Cavalry Regiment from 1907 until its closure in 1959. The depot also served as a training ground for the Wyoming National Guard from 1920 to 1959. The depot was reopened in 1960 as the Riverton Army Ammunition Plant and remained so until its closure in 1998. In 1958, the United States Congress passed legislation authorizing the purchase of 1 million rounds of ammunition for artillery batteries stationed throughout America. The munitions were bought through an appropriation act and arrived at the plant on December 16, 1960. At that time, Riverton became known as "the Arsenal of America." Since reactivating operations at Riverton in 1998, it has been among one of few arsenals retained by the U.S. Department of Defense after being closed since World War II including Fort Bliss (Texas), Lackland Air Force Base (San Antonio), Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (New Jersey), Fort Polk (La Pine County) and Whitewood Arsenal (Maryland). The Riverton Valley Cavalry was organized on February 15, 1876. colonel John D. Rockefeller donated the land for the unit and it first served in the Wyoming Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Mexican-American War. The regiment became a cavalry squadron and then an infantry regiment before being redesignated as the Riverton Valley Cavalry on October 1, 1912. The unit served in World War I as part of the 7th Cavalry Division, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division and later 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The cavalry squadron was redesignated again on September 9, 1946 as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (Air) with training at Shaw Air Force Base in North Carolina. On November 3rdhesis squadron moved to RAF Fairford Airfield England for exercises with United States Army Air Forces groups then returned to Riverton on December 12th 1946.
Riverton is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. Riverton is home to the Sheridan County Courthouse and the Riverton Museum of History and Art. The first people to live in what is now Riverton were wagoners who followed the Platte River south from Fort Laramie. They built log cabins and hunted game on the upper Missouri River valley they named after their native land: Nebraska. In 1876, a group of Sioux led by Sitting Bull burned much of Dodge City before being driven out by U.S. Cavalry under General Alfred Terry. The Sioux moved into present-day Sheridan County in 1877 and began trading goods with settlers on the Arkansas Fork of the Platte River which flowed through their territory. In 1881, construction began on the town of Sheridan on an artificial beach formed by dredging a channel over sandbars that surrounded Grand Island just north ofpresent-day Riverton. By 1886, about 400 people lived in rivertown with businesses such as stores, hotels, mills, schools and churches dotting its landscape. In 1903, local business man Drury Wagoner donated land for a civic center which would serve as a community hub for all residents of Sheridan County including those living near Rock Springs or Douglas City along Interstate 20 eastward to Denver or West Yellowstone across US 25 northward to Laramie beyond present day I-80/I-25 junction northwest of town limits . After years of fundraising by many individuals and groups alike (including one summer project involving 4500 volunteers), construction began on what would eventually become known as "The Works" - an impressive structure consisting of 5 stories high containing meeting rooms capable seating up to 150 people plus movie theaters (one seated 16), banks (2nd floor only), shops (1st floor only) and finally houses for 40+ families provided space on 3 sides facing onto State Highway 7A which connected town with Rock Springs services then ran down State Highway 7E back into town past school property continuing east until it crossed I-80/I-25 at milepost 231 northeast of town limits leaving residents Freemont Road access past today's I-80 junction direct access from both directions without having to go through downtown Sheridan

The town was founded on the confluence of the Laramie and Kenai Rivers, about 22 miles northwest of Cheyenne. In 1902, Riverton became a city when it annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Hughesville. The city's growth was continued by annexation of neighboring towns during the 1930s and 1940s: Green Hills in 1933, North Platte in 1936, Logan in 1938, South Pass in 1944, White Sands in 1954, and La Push in 1959. Today Riverton is one of the most significant communities within Wyoming’s Republican Party statewide structure and celebrates its 150th anniversary this year with various events including an Annual Faireground Parade & Festival on Saturday October 14th from 9am to 1pm along Center Street with live music from local bands throughout the day!
The Riverton area was first settled by the Hidatsa in the 1820s. The area became a part of Wyoming Territory in 1864, and then Indian Territory in 1907. The town of Riverton was founded at the confluence of the Big Horn and Little Horn rivers in 1909. It was briefly renamed Heber City before being renamed Riverton again in 1925.
