Riverton is a small town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Riverton is part of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Nation. The river that flows through town is named for General George Custer. The first army deployment gift history in Riverton happened on September 10th, 1894 when the U.S. 5th Cavalry Regiment arrived to garrison Fort Laramie. At that time, Fort Laramie was only a temporary military garrison and there was no stationed regiment of cavalry within Powell's Peak National Monument at that time. The 5th Cavalry Regiment disembarked from their horses and took up quarters in a school house on Main Street until Battery A could be built nearby to serve as their artillery battalion headquarters which would later become known as "Majestic" magazine building #1 (later Majestic No 2). On October 3rd 1894, Captain John Sutter arrived with Company K of the 4th Infantry Regiment to take over command of what would become known as "Aurora" Barracks #2 (later Aurora barracks #1) which stood just east of present day Interstate 80 on what is now called South Park Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets NW in Riverton today... Captain Sutter set about organizing his new unit into companies and began carrying out drills with his company soldiers outside the barracks door throughout October 4th-5th 1894... it should be noted that this particular all-volunteer force constituted one third of the entire strength available for duty during those early days when Army deployments were still quite limited by numbers... Powell's Peak had been opened to visitors by President Grover Cleveland on July 14th 1893 so there was plenty of land for troops to encamp but unfortunately due to lack of fundsArmy troop deployed gifts never became very popular among residents or businesses because travelers usually left Lakota Sioux camps much sooner than Army units did so people generally got to see active duty troops only after they had gone home or were relieved from duty... nonetheless some Soldiers did stay longer than necessary while others trained/deployed elsewhere before finally departing for various other postings around Dakota Territory or Colorado Springs Colorado where they would eventually return home... In November 1896 General Joseph Wheeler arrived at Fort Laramie with 7 infantry battalions under his command including Company F of Battalion GAR 2nd New Mexico Volunteer Infantry who also served as escorts for wagon trains taking supplies back west across country en route to Ft Carson San Miguel Mission Santa Fe Depot near Denver Colorado... On November 15TH 1896 Captain Wesson Haggerty arrived from Stroudsburg PA with his 3rd US Cavalry Squadron led by Major James Meeks commanding officer accompanied by 11 Mounted Riflemen Assistant Commanders Colfax Ewing (4 guns), Jno Neely (3 guns), Pte Ennis Waddell (2 guns)served as escort detachment for wagon train bringing supplies back east across country destined for Ft Carson San Miguel Mission Santa Fe Depot near Denver Colorado... On December 9TH 1896 Battle Of Little Big Horn occurred when 6 Companies US Army $6 each under Capt David Graves fought against 11 Native American tribes estimated 40 warriors total opposing 6 Companies US Army $30 each commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Johnson fighting against 8 Chiefs estimated 200 warriors total attacking 400 mounted men led by Lt Col George Armstrong Johnson
