When the Wyoming Air National Guard's 143d Fighter Wing was activated in 1942, it was the only active duty USAF unit in the state. The wing flew Spitfires and P-51s during World War II, and then transitioned to Mustangs during the Korean War. After that fight, the wing became a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter squadron. In 1949, the 143d Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 123d Fighter Wing and moved from Moline to Riverton in central Wyoming. The new wing began operations with Republic F-84G Thunderjets and flew training missions until 1957 when it transitioned to Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft. From 1958 through 1966, the 123d FW flew airlift missions for Operation Good Neighbor which transported supplies to Vietnam. The 123d FW also equipped with KC-135 Stratotankers during this time period. In 1969, after more than 20 years of service Hellfire missiles were transferred to the wing from RAF Mildenhall AFB England as part of an upgrade program for all USAF fighter squadrons involved in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm I & II. These planes were used for strike missions against Iraqi targets in northern Iraq during those two wars; they also provided support for ski jump training at Green Mountain Ski Resort near Aspen (later Whiteknights Ski Resort). During these years riverton saw major growth as a result of industry being attracted to its location on both sides ofthe Republican River Valley: sizable warehouses were built along Wagon Wheel Drive while other businesses sprouted up around town like a pet food store and a bakery/cafeteria complex. A variety of events were staged throughout this period including parades and graduation exercises for local high school students;ifestations such as these helped showcase Riverton as an important center for aviation in central Wyoming."

Riverton is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,492 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located on the lower Snake River and around the confluence of the Salmon and Powder Rivers. It is part of the Sheridan Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Riverton was George Hargrave in 1868. He built a log cabin on an island in the river and named it after his birthplace, Rutherford County, New Jersey. A post office called Hargrave was established in 1875, but no mail went to it because there was no road from Sheridan to Riverton. In 1895, a wagonroad was built from Sheridan to Riverton and then east to Strongsville; this allowed goods to be transported between those two towns easily. In 1903, the United States Post Office moved from Hargrave downstream to its present location on Main Street near First Avenue (now US 287). That same year saw another important event when three brothers – Harry Wetherald III (Harry Wetherald II had died earlier that year), John Wetherald Jr., and Nelson Wetherald – founded The Wyoming Coal Company Ltd., which would become one of Wyoming's most successful businesses. The company shipped coal by boat downriver until World War I when they began shipping cars by railroads out of their plant on Monument Hill (later renamed White Sands) until their plant burned down in 1951; this led to them becoming one of America's largest transportation companies before they were bought out by Amtrak for $1 million in 1987. The local paper mill closed its doors for good in 1984 but reopened as a food processing plant about 15 miles away some time later due to advances made technology- such as 3D printing- which allows products like meatballs or pasta dough without being killed during production according to Frontier Times writer “Tommy” Kapp who has written extensively about local business hereabouts over many years” . This gave rise much speculation among residents as people living close by started hearing reports that sometimes strange objects would crop up at variousprocessing plants all across southeastern Wyoming while employees were getting sick with mysterious illnesses including cases of men falling into wells immediately after work.. Some believe this could have been related spillage or other malfunctions associated with 3D printing processes however there has never been any concrete evidence linking any particular factory or product with any specific illness.. Riverson's economy changed significantly following World War II when federal programs increased demand for coal resulting in decreased availability outside of eastern Wyoming thanks largely Interstate 85 and railroad construction; accordingly many farmers moved into what had been abandoned mining areas northeast of town making travel difficult if not impossible.. During this time also new housing developments sprung up throughout town reaching levels not seen since before prohibition ended;; these include several subdivisions announced specifically for workers commuting into town jobs like “Wyoming Heights” which opened less than 2 miles from downtown featuring 24 homes/condos/hotels/restaurants directly off Interstate 880.; followed soon thereafter by “Riverton Place” just north of Broadway nestled among tall trees commanding views over Highway 89.; finally situated right next door at what used once been an amusement park called Six Flags Over Target Field now home to Plainview Park features several restaurants,, multiple bars,, movie theaters,,and more along with athletic fields perfect for young children playing baseball or soccer against other teams within easy walking distance
The first European to explore and map the area was General John Jacob Astor, who in 1824 led an expedition that discovered a route from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. The region was soon being explored by fur traders and miners, with the first gold mine being established in 1859. By 1870, over 50 mining towns had been founded in Riverton and its environs, including some of the earliest hydraulic fracturing operations in North America. The city of Riverton was founded on the Missouri River in 1865 as a utopian community designed to promote irrigated agriculture and prevent flooding of nearby cities. However, by 1907 Riverton's population had reached 10,000 people and it became part of Sheridan County. In 1924, Sheridan County merged with Laramie County to form Wyoming Territory.
