Laramie is a small town in Wyoming, located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 5,240 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Laramie County. The first permanent settler in what is now Laramie County was James Wickersham, who arrived in 1829. Not long after, John Custer and his unit of buffalo hunters arrived and named the area for General George Armstrong Custer's forces that had recently defeated Native American chiefs at Battle Creek (now Fort Casey). Wickersham donated land to build a courthouse and jail near present-day Laramie City. Other early settlers included Isaac Tiffin and John Patton. In 1859, following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, about 60 black men from Missouri were brought overland to western Wyoming by wagon train under the leadership of Captain Nathaniel Banks. They established a camp called Bent Creek near present-day Sheridan before traveling east to Cheyenne through Nebraska Territory. When they reached Laramie County, they erected a tent colony on Buffalo Ridge about 1 mile northeast ofpresent-day downtown Laramie. Over time, other groups also began settling in this part of Wyoming: army troops during World War I; ranchers during Prohibition; miners during the Gold Rush; and entrepreneurs such as Jens Jacobsen who founded Jacobsen & Co., an ice cream company that became one of America's leading businesses. Laramie experienced rapid growth following World War II as people came to work in nearby mining towns and ranching operations; manufacturing took off with construction companies such as Brown Construction Company erecting factories along Interstate 80 outside town limits beginning in the late 1940s; and then ghost towns sprang up around Intermountain Highway exits when these routes became increasingly congested with workers commuting into larger cities for jobs elsewhere within Wyoming or Colorado Springs or Denver or Salt Lake City etc., creating malls complete with storesanchored inside malls across North America where customers could buy everything from cars to underwear Medieval art was auctioned off at art auctions throughout North America including several times each year at various places such as Aspen, Pueblo de Albuquerque NM etc.; conventions were held all over North America every summer like PCA (Pioneer Conventions) which has beenheld every 4 years since 1972 including 2015 which will be its 50th year . Laramie experiences occasional glimpses of old pioneer days when streetcars stop running outside town Limits just past Union Pacific Railroad tracks next to ancient irrigation canals still used today but generally no visitors are allowed so it may not be much different than many other small towns similar to it around North America where "old timers" still live/visit albeit mostly anonymously
