Green River is located in the central Great Plains region of Wyoming. The river forms the eastern border of that state and flows south to north, crossing the Continental Divide at its confluence with the Arikaree River. The basin that Green River forming covers an area of about 302,000 square miles and has a population of about 171,000 people. The climate in Green River is relatively mild for the Great Plains; average temperatures range from , although high summer temperatures can reach as much as . precipitation averages per year but there is some variation due to altitude and location. The name "Green River" was given to the river by early pioneers because they saw a green watercourse on their journey up the valley. Today, many residents refer to Green River as just "the river". The first European settlers arrived in what is now Wyoming in 1824-26 following exploration and travel along both sides of the Rockies by Ute Chief Black Hawk. The first white men known to have explored this area were Jedediah Smith and his party who discovered gold near present day Laramie on July 7, 1828 while mining for coal near Fort Bridger. When Smith’s group reached what became known as Green River Valley he named it after one of his Creek friends (not actually related), James Wirtz (1795-1868). A few years later prospectors traveling downriver realized there must be more valuable minerals here than had been thought and began looking for them; this led to further exploration which established Wyoming’s mineral industry. In 1859 James Pelly organized a company called “Wyoming Consolidated Mines Company” which leased land east of present day Laramie from John Custer in order explore these new properties. It was not until 1863 when Washoe County was created out of most of Laramie County that any prospecting activity occurred within its boundaries including those around GreenRiver proper where today's town stands (although development does occur outside its limits). In 1865 two companies finally located enough coal seams west of Sheridan for American Coal & Coke Company (ACC) to begin production; however much like today's coal fields across western Wyoming, these were very difficult to mine since overburden made surface efforts nearly impossible without blasting or other destructive methods rather than using modern technology which still exists today. Instead ACC relied on underground mining techniques which continued through 1870 when construction began on what would become known as Central cyanide smelting plant Number 1 – one contemporary with famous plants such as those near Pittsburgh PA used in Standard Oil operations during World War I before being dismantled during Prohibition). This method allowed large areas (>50 acres) beneath Snake Buttes rich coal seams without having to blast or use other destructive methods; consequently reducing tantamount amounts pollution caused by surface workings even though nearby rivers remained turbid throughout most of operation!
