Green River, Wyoming is a small town located in the Johnson County seat of Green River. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Coffee beans were first grown in the area in the 1830s by Spanish colonists. The first coffee factory was built here in 1874 and became one of the largest coffee producers in America. In 1911, Green River became an incorporated town and until recently it was known as "The Coffee City". Today, coffee production is mostly local and hand-picked from small farmers in the area. Coffee has been a part of Wyoming for many years and has a rich history dating back to when it was first grown on this continent. Some of the earliest references to coffee can be found from ancient Greece and Rome where it was mentioned as "the new wine" because it could be brewed without any sugar or other additives. In 1786, during American Revolutionary War, General George Washington learned about coffee while visiting Fort Laramie near present day Green River. He returned to France with some 40 pounds (22 kg) of pure Java beans which he introduced into our country as a gift for Lord Howe (later King George III). Washington's decision to bring java beans back with him to America helped spur the development of coffee culture here in North America. During World War II, green beans were used by military commanders all over Europe for their caffeine content which gave them an edge over their opponents during battlecruises. After war ended, green beans continued to play an important role as agricultural produce here at home until they replaced rice as our state food in 1976 after passage of The Wyoming Rice Development Act_. It wasn't until 1997 that blueberry bushes were planted around town so that people could enjoy blueberry flavored coffees too!
