Gillette, Wyoming is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. Gillette was founded in 1881 by soldiers from nearby Fort Laramie and became part of Sheridan County when it was organized on November 15, 1886. The townsite at site of today's Gillette consisted of two small parcels of land separated by a creek. One parcel was donated to the town by John W. Merrill; the other parcel was donated by General George Armstrong Custer after he died in battle near Gillette in 1876. On October 9, 1888, the first store opened in what is now downtown Gillette with goods from Omaha City, Nebraska. A post office called "Gillette" was established in 1891 and continued operation until 1907; however, it received its present name on December 10th that year when Territorial Governor Ozzie Kahl appointed Captain Edward Pogue as Postmaster General for Wyoming Territory and designated Gillettesville as the new Post Office name within thatagiure (the present-day city). In 1903–1904 an agreement between local farmers and ranchers resulted in creation of a irrigation canal through which water could be delivered to remote farms much farther south than had been possible before due to lack of access to rivers or canals elsewhere in the territory (see History of irrigated agriculture in Wyoming). In 1909 construction began on what would become one of the largest concrete blocks ever built – Western Union Telegraph Building – located just east of downtown on Main Street between First Avenue and South Third Street. That same year saw also establishment as a school district for Sheridan County with buildings including a courthouse/ Jail and Administration Building along with classrooms/schoolroom/hallway building situated northwest cornering North First Avenue overlooking Main Street across street from now known as civic center ( thenceforth School District No 2). On January 16th 1912 President William Howard Taft announced his decision not to seek re-election at this time due to health concerns; however he did not retire until May 20th 1914 making him only 89 years old at death! At this time there were over 80 businesses operating throughout Sheridan County! In 1916 Douglas MacArthur served as an instructor during World War I while living in Casper; he later moved back westward to Gillette where he started his own business importing groceries from Japan into central Wyoming Territory under license from Uritakusha Co., Ltd.. He retired from that business fulltime just prior to World War II when war came declaring himself Commander-in-Chief Southwest Pacific Theater Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force Area #1!!
