The first European tosight this area was Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne in 1769. He named the spot for himself, after his father, General Jean-Baptiste La Salle. In 1859, John C. Frémont explored the Wyoming region and discovered what would become Gillette. When he arrived in town, he found that there were no mills or stores to provide goods for the people of the area so he set about establishing himself as an entrepreneur and businessman. In 1861, Frémont founded the Wagon Wheel Coffee Company with help from his brother-in-law William Haggard. This company became one of the largest coffee producers in America at its time and provided quality coffee to local grocery stores and hotels all over Wyoming. Frémont also played a large role in helping create Colorado Springs which would become one of America’s most important commercial cities during this time period. It is said that because of his business ventures into Colorado Springs, Frémont developed a strong friendship with Ulysses S Grant which helped pave the way for future political dealings between these two powerful men!

The area that now comprises Gillette was first settled by Mormons from Utah in 1868. In 1870, Colonel George Washington Gillette donated land to the town for development purposes. The first store in Gillette opened its doors on December 12, 1879. The store became one of the most important stores in the community until it closed its doors in 1969. The last owner of the store died in 1984. At its peak,Gillette had a post office, 5 banks, 2 churches, 1 school, 1 doctor's office and 4 hotels.[1] In 1969, when it closed its doors for good after more than 50 years of business operation,[2], Gillette had a population of only 350 people living within limits established by deed restriction which at that time prohibited towns with a population over 3200 from forming.[3] Today much less activity occurs within those boundaries than at any time previous; however there are still several residences located within them which serve as local landmarks or hosts occasional events such as dances or Christmas celebrations.][4][5]
