Cheyenne is a city in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was estimated to be 596,721 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Colorado and has consistently been named one of the safest cities in America. The city was founded on November 4, 1868 by George Armstrong Custer after he and his regiment reached Fort Laramie from Fort Bridger on October 16th. The first post office opened in Cheyenne on December 3, 1868. The name "Cheyenne" was given to it by General Edward Ament who led American forces against Pawnee Indians during the Black Hills Campaign of 1876. The first school in Cheyenne was First Academy which opened on February 14th, 1870. In 1872, a gristmill and sawmill were built and became known as “The Millinery Shop” because so much lace and other fabric was manufactured hereabouts. The Cheyennes had no retail stores until about 1907 when they started opening up around town with a few exceptions such as Mrs. Haas’ grocery store which still operates today (Founded 1865). In 1901 an express train ran from Denver to Wyoming carrying supplies for gold miners throughout that state including silver mining operations at Kavanaugh Butte near Asotin where silver was discovered in 1886 but not mined until 1896 due to availability of coal instead These days some small mines are open for visitors but most production takes place underground or away from public view

Cheyenne is a city located in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Plains region. The first white person to live in Cheyenne was John Fetterman, who arrived there in 1868 as an employee of the North Dakota Telegraph Company. He and his wife also founded a trading post in 1869 called Fettermans Trading Post and Store. In 1870, Fetterman married Rosalie Sweet, who had come from nearby Ft. Laramie with her husband Ira Stevens and their four children. The settlement grew rapidly thanks to its location on the Santa Fe Trail and its access to water supplies from the Black Hills, which were then being explored for gold. In 1872, Fetterman organized what became known as the "Cowboys" teamsters company to transport goods between Cheyenne and Fort Bridger on the Tongue River. By 1880, Cheyenne had more than 100 residents and was home to two schools (one public and one private), a Methodist church (built in 1875), four churches (oneMethodist, three Baptist/Orthodox Protestant denominations), a hotel/motel (1882-1900), several stores (including one that served alcohol until 1907) and four physician's offices (1892-1901). By 1912 it had grown into an extended city with a streetcar line running through it; by 1920 it had lost most of its original growth but still counted nearly 1,000 residents
