Cheyenne is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. The town was founded in 1868 by James Fenton and his family as a small trading post on the Yellowstone River. The name "Cheyenne" comes from the Sioux word “k’e-yi-nuh” meaning "the place where buffalo grazed." In 1876, Cheyenne became part of the newly created Dakota Territory when that area was split off from Nebraska. The first white settlers in Cheyenne were John Atherton and his family who arrived in 1877. By 1880, Cheyenne had about 100 residents. The railroad reached Cheyenne in 1893 and started passenger service soon afterwards; this made it easier for people to get around and support their businesses. In 1898, George Wickersham donated land to build an arena for the Wyoming State Fair which still stands today; this event is now known as the Wickerham Cup Meeting. In 1902, construction began on the current courthouse building which was completed in 1904; this building served as both a courthouse and jail until 1978 when it was replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today. In 1905, there were also several explosions near downtown that caused extensive damage; these blasts are considered to be one of the most destructive natural disasters in Wyoming history. Over 50 people were killed and over 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed including many homes which remain standing today thanks to their sturdy architecture! It wasn't until 1907 that Quartzite Creek Bridge was built across Quartzite Creek between Cheyenne and Tonopah Junction; this bridge helped make getting between those two towns much easier since it removed most of what used to require traveling down Quartzite Creek itself! In 1914, Manning Air Force Base opened up within spitting distance of townlimits making life much more difficult for everyone living within range! However, things got better after that with WWI starting up and all sorts of military activities happening closer to home (thankfully no bombs went off here). As time passed though some problems started cropping up again such as tension over water rights etc.; however things eventually calmed down again thanks largely to local activism group called Protect Our Water Rights which did a lot of lobbying back then! In 1949/50 a major fire broke out near downtown causing extensive damage; fortunately no lives were lost but it did cause some inconvenience due to all of the destroyed property!. As recently as 1962 there still remained some tension over water rights but things have generally calmed down since then...sortof!

In 1950, it merged with nearby Pampa to form the current city of Cheyenne-Pampa-Teton City which has a total population of over 50,000 residents today. The history of Cheyenne goes back many years and there are many stories about its founding that have been passed down through generations of residents. One story tells about two brothers who were traveling through Wyoming when they saw an open country full of buffalo and decided to go explore it. When they got there, they found that there was no way for them to get back home so they set up camp for the night near where Cheyenne now stands. The next day they started exploring more and found another open country full of buffalo so they went back home and told their brother everything that had happened while they were away: They had seen new land where buffalo didn'texistent before; you could hunt them if you wanted; everyone there spoke English so this must be some place big because nobody ever died from being lost like that before; their mother must have been very happy because she always said "If only we'd known then what we know now." These simple but powerful stories create an understanding for why Cheyenne has grown into such a large city today: It's because its residents take pride in their community culture and heritage
