Cheyenne, Wyoming is a town in Logan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. The name "Cheyenne" means "place where the Cheyennes hunted." The first people to live in what is now Cheyenne were Arapaho and Pawnee. The area that became Cheyenne was part of the Rocky Mountains region and was not discovered until 1876 when Colonel George Armstrong Custer rode his horse into what is now Cheyenne on July 24th while exploring the Black Hills region of western Wyoming. In 1881, a post office called "Cheyenne" was established in Logan County by James Wickersham and Alfred Gibbs. In 1902, it changed its name to "Logan". In 1907, it became a city. On January 1st 1909, it amalgamated with two other towns - Sheridan and Laramie - forming the present-day City of Logan (formerly known as Sheridan). On December 15th 1911, due to an earthquake which struck central Wyoming within days of each other, both Linnville and Sheridan had their incorporation proceedings postponed for one year because their respective governments did not have enough money to finance incorporation costs from existing taxes alone. On October 21st 1912 however those proceedings were finally completed without any further postponement and Linnville became an incorporated community under the same name as her sister town Sheridan just one day after that event happened! The first post office in what is now Cheyenne opened on March 3rd 1865 with mail coming from Fort Bridger via stagecoach from eastern Nebraska Territory. By 1886 there were three mail stations serving this area: One at Moose Lodge near present day Heber City; another at Independence Springs about southeast of here; and still another north of Old Town on US 60 near Nowata Lake which served until 1890 when all four service ended because no more trains ran through those areas anymore due to railroad construction projects!
