Casper, Wyoming was once a bustling mining town that saw heavy industry until the early 20th century. However, Casper's fortunes changed after the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1869. The railroad brought new settlers and businesses to the town, which led to a boom in coffee production. Two years after the railroad arrived, Casper had its first coffee roaster. Coffee beans were originally roasted by hand in small batches and sold directly to individuals and businesses. However, with larger scale production came greater economic opportunity for those who invested in coffee beans. By 1907, Casper had its own mill that grinded all of its own beans. As demand increased for quality coffee beans from around the world, small roasters began to face competition from larger mills and large cafes began to import their favorite bean types. Today, caspers still enjoy a rich variety of coffees thanks to multiple small roasters who continue to produce high-quality beans at lower costs than larger operations can provide. Casper, Wyoming is home to the first coffee shop in the state of Wyoming and it opened in 1892. The coffee shop was known as the Cafe de la Rue and it served coffee until 1914. It then moved to its current location on Main Street in Casper and reopened in 1915.
Casper is a small town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 2,468 at the 2010 census. Casper is the most populous city in Laramie County and the second most populous city in Wyoming. It is located on the eastern edge of Sheridan County and west of Cheyenne. The first people to live in what is now Casper were French Canadian fur traders who built a trading post there in 1811. The post was abandoned by 1814 because of Native American hostility toward white settlers. In 1868, Brigham Young founded a Mormon colony at Fort Bridger near today's Casper after traveling through Laramie County on his way to California. After about two years of construction, Fort Bridger was abandoned due to lack of food and water supplies and remained unoccupied for several years. In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant granted land east of present-day Casper to Brigham Young's followers as part of the Morrill Land Grant Act (1862). This land included much that still lies within Laramie County today: parts of Sheridan and Box Elder counties were annexed by Laramie County in 1902; but much else including all or nearly all of what now makes up Casper was taken over by Sheridan county when it was created from eastern Laramie county on November 1, 1907 (the day before Wyoming became a state). Cache Creek flows through downtown Casper and forms part of its name; other local waterways include White River which drain into Cache Creek from north-central Sheridan county and Mill Run which drains into Cache Creek from south-central Sheridan county. The town also has its own wastewater treatment plant operated by dairying company Interceptor Solutions Inc.. They started marketing their coffee under the name "Brasilia" and soon became known throughout the world. Over time, they added other countries' brands to their portfolio, including Italian Coffee Company (ICC), Swiss Coffee Company (SWiss Chalet), Dutch Coffee Company (NVK), French Coffee Company (FCA) and Australian Coffee Corporation (AC). As the industry grew more complex and various types of beans were roasted different ways, it was difficult for one company to dominate all aspects of it. This made sense because each company had its own strengths: ICC was able to produce high-quality espresso while Swiss Chalet excelled at flavored coffees; NVK created delicious chocolate coffees; FCA produced smooth but challenging black java; and AC offered unique blends which differentiated them from the competition. However, over time some companies emerged as dominant players: BCC created an addictive blend called " hoax ", NUCO emerged as a major player in Colombian coffee production, and CTTC dominated Turkish/Eastern European production. In 1903, it became a city under the name of Casper. In 1907, the post office was renamed after Caspar Auerbach, an influential figure in German culture and society who had come to America to expand his business interests. The medical college which became University of Wyoming began operations in 1912 in what is now Casper Municipal Center. The university relocated to Laramie in 1951 and closed there two years later due to budget cuts; however, it reopened as Wyoming State University in 1957 with a new campus on the north side of town near Interstate 80.
