The Wyoming Air Force Museum in Casper, Wyoming has an airforce gift history that goes back to the early 1900s. The museum is home to over 50 aircraft and items from the Wright brothers’ First World War flying tour. One of the most famous air force gifts was a machine gun that became known as “The Gizmo.” In 1941, General George Cothran presented a Consolidated B-25 bomber to the Wyoming Air Force after it had been donated by Captain Edward Doolittle. The plane was used for bombing raids against Japan. In 1945, another Consolidated B-25 bomber was given to the Wyoming Air Force by General Curtis LeMay after it had been donated by him during his time as Director of Intelligence for the United States armed forces. This plane also served as a training aircraft for American fighter pilots before its donation to the Wyoming Air Force in 1951. Since its inception, the Wyoming Air Force Museum in Casper has housed many different types of aircraft and items from across the military services. Casper, Wyoming is a small town in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The population was 5,642 at the 2010 census. Casper is the seat of Laramie County and has been since 1876. The first residents of what is now Casper were Emigrant Trails pioneers who settled there in 1847-48 when they left Fort Bridger to join General George Armstrong Custer on his ill-fated Dakota Expedition. The area that would become Casper was occupied by the Cheyenne, Arapaho and Sioux before being claimed by the United States as part of the Black Hills region during the Mexican–American War in 1846. When gold was discovered near Forts Bridger and Washakie in 1865, settlers began flowing into the area, including some from Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory. In 1870, Casper merchants founded what would become Wall Street Bank and Trust Company with $3,000 from Wm Halsey Smith and James Murchison. By 1880, local mills had produced flour for Des Moines (Iowa) and Omaha (Nebraska). In 1902, it became apparent that coal mines could not be developed commercially in this remote corner of Wyoming so a new railroad line was built which connected these mines to Chicago via Medicine Bow Summit Pass. This led to an increased demand for goods coming through Casper so banks decided to open branches here instead of going out of business on their routes through Denver or Salt Lake City. One such bank branch that opened its doors on Main Street in 1903 was First National Life Insurance Company which later became American Overseas Credit Corporation after selling its assets back into private hands in 1967-1968; this illustrates how important banking had become for early Casper settlers! A post office called "Casper" was established at this time but no mail ever arrived due to difficult travel conditions over those days! In 1907-1908 a school named after Mrs John Pemberton Geddesopened up at what is now White Sands Elementary School; this demonstrates how important education was back then for many families living in rural areas! There also wasn’t much development until World War II when a steel plant started up downtown which led to an increase in jobs for locals plus an influx of soldiers working long hours building tanks and planes during that time period! After World War II came prosperity as more people started moving into town because of new technologies like automobiles which made life easier outside work hours; this included Sears & Roebuck opening their first store downtown – another indication that hard work goes hand-in-hand with success when it comes to Wyoming’s history!
