The Marine Corps has been deployed in Wisconsin Rapids for over 40 years. In that time, the Marines have set up and operated a number of bases in the city. Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the Fox River. The population was 7,835 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-most populous city in Wisconsin and its second-largest after Milwaukee. It is part of Green Bay metropolitan area. Wisconsin Rapids was first settled by Frenchmen in 1673 and became a town in 1848 when it was annexed by Green Bay. The name "Rappers" comes from early English settlers who named the river rapids after one of theirMembers of Parliament, William Rappers (1763-1827). The original village site lay near what is now downtown Wisconsin Rapids on Lakeshore Drive between State Road #6 and Morningside Avenue. On July 11, 1851, the town's charter was granted to John Davenport as head resident magistrate with full powers over all aspects of local government including education, morality and religion; commerce; internal improvements; land reclamation; fire insurance; elections; criminal prosecutions and trade unionism control over labor unions which were then illegal under state law at that time. In 1861, Davenport donated 640 acres (2 km²) along County Road #1 east of present day Interstate 94 for municipal use only with Village Hall to be built thereon as well as other civic buildings such as a jail, schoolhouse and post office building soon thereafter which remain intact today within walking distance of each other across open field boundaries Still operating today are: Hennepin County Courthouse Annex (1901), First National Bank Building (1912), Regional Medical Center - Wisconsin Rapids Branch (1963), Masonic Lodge No 1 -Wisconsin Rapids Lodge/First United Methodist Church Building (1959), Walmart - Towne Centre building #2 & 3 [now demolished], First United Methodist ChurchBuilding [demolished]

Wisconsin Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Fox Cities metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by believers in Methodism and Lutheranism who left Grand Isle for Wisconsin Rapids because of its rich soil and water supplies for mills built by early settlers. The first mill was built on the east side of downtown by John Hargrave and steamboats brought flour to market from Superior, Michigan. By 1850, there were ten mills in town with a total production capacity of 2 million bushels per year. During World War II, the American military constructed five airfields within easy reach of town- including one at nearby Krakow Airport which served as an auxiliary airstrip for training pilots during World War II; this also helped to support local manufacturing activity as many aircraft parts were produced here including engines, wings, antennas and other components used in airplanes and missiles throughout the war years. In recent decades, Wisconsin Rapids has undergone a renaissance with new development along the Fox River waterfront such as Oriole Park at Waterfront Place (a $350 million mixed-use development), One First Street Bridge (completed in 2016) connecting riverfront properties directly to I-94/I-79/Wisconn Ave., and various hotels & restaurants crowning what had once been an agricultural outpost with rapidly gentrifying residents living near some of North America's most affluent neighborhoods; recent additions to this growing community include two universities: UW–Milwaukee (the largest campus within Milwaukee County) and Marquette University (the second largest university within Milwaukee County).
Wisconsin Rapids was founded in 1836 by Alexander McKay and his family. The town became a important railroad junction in the mid-19th century and grew rapidly due to its natural resources.
