Wisconsin Rapids is a small town in the Wisconsin River Valley, about 25 miles north of Green Bay. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kenosha County, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wisconsin Rapids were French fur traders in 1633-34. They discovered a portage between the river and Lake Superior and named it "Rouge Portage." The first permanent settler was Nicholas Jorgenson in 1795. He built a log cabin on the northwest side of the river and named it "Jorgensen's Fort." The town was platted in 1836 by Alexander Shields and James Whetstone. It became one of six townships within Kenosha County when it was organized on November 2, 1848. Wisconsin Rapids grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military installations along with its abundant paper productsproduction from local mills. Many people worked for United States Paper Company which had its main plant here until 1971 when it merged with other companies to form Drexel Burnham Lambert (DBL). After years of production decline, DBL announced plans in 2001 to close their paper mill in Illinois but kept it open as an souvenir mill until its closure on October 15, 2006 after 113 years of uninterrupted operation

Wisconsin Rapids is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Wisconsin Rapids was Nicholas Jorgensen who arrived on July 4, 1838. He and his family built a cabin on the site of present day's township hall. Jorgensen served as Justice of the Peace for Racine County from 1839 to 1840. Wm Hays appointed him Postmaster of Racine on December 5, 1840. Bennett & Green lumber company started up in 1886 and soon outgrew its original sawmill site which became known as "The Saw Mill Site." In 1916, Bennett & Green merged with the Milwaukee Road Company to become American Bridge Corporation and continued manufacturing bridge products until it went bankrupt in 1966. In 1930, ownership of the local high school changed hands when Racine-based Central High School merged with nearby West Allis High School to form UW-Milwaukee District 8 (now UW-Avery). The new school board decided that Wisconsin Rapids' existing high school wouldn't meet necessary standards so they replaced it with Valley View Middle School which opened in 1931. In 1949, American Bridge Corporation sold their bridge products business to Northern Pacific Railway who renamed it Northern Pacific Railroad Corp.. This company operated the facility until 1971 when it was closed by order of then president Richard Nixon due to railroad influence over government policy
Wisconsin Rapids was founded by the Potawatomi tribe in 1836. The town grew quickly and soon became a center for trade and commerce. In 1858, the first post office was established in Wisconsin Rapids. The town developed into a large city by the early 1900s, and by 1920 it had reached its peak population size. However, during the Great Depression Wisconsin Rapids lost much of its economic stability and fell victim to social problems. In the 2000s, however,Wisconsin Rapids began to experience Revival growth as a result of new development projects and initiatives such as arts and culture programs.
