Whitewater is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Whitewater is the home of the Whitewater River and State Park. The town was founded in 1854 by settlers from Illinois. The first coffee shop opened in Whitewater in 1865. The first grocery store opened in Whitewater in 1870. The first post office was established in Whitewater on December 7, 1876. It closed on May 2, 1915. In 1886, the Chicago Great Western Railway built a line from Racine to Milwaukee that passed through Whitewater and connected with the Milwaukee Railroad at Beloit Square. This connection madeWhitewater an important transportation center for goods arriving from the north and east. In 1910, when Racine Avenue became assigned as one of four streets running along Wisconsin's southern border with Illinois, it also became known as "the avenue of Coffee." By this time coffee had become an important part of local culture and commerce hereabouts; early cafes were often called "coffee shops." In 1922-1923 a major renovation and enlargement of Racine Avenue's business district occurred which included new storefronts and more than doubling the number of coffee shops serving both Domestic (hot chocolate) drinks and espresso beans/milks products such as Donatos Coffee & Tea Company (one still remains open today), Brownells Coffee Shop & Cafe (now defunct), Starbucks Coffee Company (opened August 29th 2009), Peet's Pharmacy (February 1st 1914) – all located on what is now Racine Ave NW corner Washington Rd., just south of Interstate 94 exit 25B near downtown Milwaukee; Harry Altman's Bakery closed after 125 years February 2013 Avenue Cottage Apartments completed development November 4th 1936 across intersection I-94 exit 25B from original Harry Altman’s Bakery building

In 1974, Whitewater merged with Racine to form the Milwaukee–Racine Metropolitan Area.

Whitewater is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 26,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Whitewater is located on the Menomonee River just south of its confluence with the Milwaukee River. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Whitewater were French traders who built a fur trading post near present-day Whitefish Bay in 1785. In 1837, Englishman John Stephenson founded a small logging and lumbering camp called Stephenson's Lake in what is now Whitewater Township. The first settler to live in Whitewater was George Cushing, who arrived in 1841. German immigrants started arriving beginning in 1845 and by 1850 they had established an agricultural community called Hegewisch northeast of town. In 1855, it was decided to create a new township based on land grants that had been given out since 1840 to farmers and lumbermen from townships across the state as part of the "Wisconsin State Assortment". On October 5,1855, the new Whitewater Township took form from portions of Hegewisch and Stevens Point Townships. The township name reflected its location on or adjacent to the Menomonee River (the original name for the river). For many years after its formation, it continued to be known as Stephenson's Lake Township because that was where most of John Stephenson's logs were cut before he moved his business eastward along the river into Racine County in 1895. whitewater timeline
The first white settlers in what is now Wisconsin were farmers and hunters who arrived in the area in the 1830s. The central part of Wisconsin was still a rural region until the mid-19th century, when settlement began to expand into the east and north. The town of Racine was founded in 1836, while Milwaukee became an important city by 1847. In 1902, Wisconsin became a state; Racine and Milwaukee remained its capital. The pace of growth slowed after World War II, but has since continued to grow with new development around the city of Milwaukee and Racine.
