Whitewater is a small town located in the Whitewater River valley of Wisconsin. The village was founded in 1854 by two men, Hiram and Henry Jennings, as a stop on the road from Green Bay to Chicago. The name "Whitewater" is derived from the word "wetland," meaning wetland region. The Whitewater River forms most of the town's border and runs through its center. The first white settler in Whitewater was James Worthy, who arrived in 1854 and built a cabin on the east bank of the Whitewater River. In 1857, Worthy married Nancy Beardsley and they moved to what is now central Whitewater. They had four children: John (1858-1937), Sarah (1860-1945), Edwin (1862-1925), and Anna (1864-1941). In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, Nancy Worthy traveled to Washington D.C., where she met him and became his wife. When he took office in March 1865, Lincoln appointed her land commissioner for Racine County. She served until 1870 when she left to become president of Milwaukee Female Seminary Incorporated. After serving as president for two years she died at home on December 12, 1875 at age 68 years old after a long life filled with service to her community and country; she was buried beside her husband at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Milwaukee."

In 1865, Wisconsinronx merged with two other businesses to create what is now known as Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. The merger created one of Wisconsin's largest insurance companies. Whitewater continued to grow until the early 1900s when It declined due to economic changes in the area and saw its population drop below 500 people by 1920
