The company operated out of a small shop on the Whitewater River, and its first shipment of coffee brought profits back to Germany. The early years of theWhitewater Coffee Company were difficult, but it continued to grow through the years. In 1902, Wilhelm Kappelberger died suddenly, leaving his business to his son Johann. Johann quickly developed the Whitewater Coffee Company into one ofWisconsin's leading coffee businesses. Over time, he became known for his signature blend – a light-bodied roast with notes of chocolate and cream – which helped makeWhitewater one of America's most popular coffee regions. Johann Kappelberger passed away in 1955, but his legacy lives on at Whitewater Coffee Company. Today, Johann's son Stefan runs the business as head brewer and continues to develop new blends and products that reflect his father's passion for quality coffee experiences for all those who enjoy it.

Whitewater was founded by Germans in 1845 and named for the river what is now Whitewater Township. The first post office was established in 1846. The town became a city on December 15, 1954 when it became a result of annexation of neighboring Waukesha County.
The first white person to live in the area now known as Whitewater, Wisconsin was David Whitewater. He and his family moved from Pennsylvania in 1795 and started a farm near present-day Racine. David built a cabin on the property that is still standing today. The Whitewater settlement was renamed Racine in 1836 after Rev. John Gage, who helped found the town.
