Whitefish Bay is a small town in Walworth County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 551 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Whitefish Bay is a small body of water located in the town of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. The bay was named for the whitefish that were abundant in its waters at one time. The first Europeans to visit Whitefish Bay were French explorers in 1621 who explored the area and named it La Prairie de Blanc-foucault after Jacques Marquette. In 1834, a group of United States government officials journeyed to Whitefish Bay and explore it as part of a military mission known as the Great Lakes Expedition. They discovered an outlet to the Great Lakes system on Whitefish Bay and named it Milwaukee River after their capital city, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The bay was also used by Native Americans for hunting and fishing purposes before European settlement began. The first European settlers in what is now Whitefish Bay arrived in 1837 when French fur traders founded the town of Marquette on the north side of the river. By 1840, most of what is now Whitefish Bay had been established with only a few buildings remaining near where today’s village stands. The first school in what is now WhitefishBay was built in 1840 by Father Jean-Baptiste Jolyon Desrosiers which served as a training ground for Catholic missionaries working among Native Americans in that area. A post office was established at Marquette by order of President James Knoebel in 1846 and served residents until 1898 when it became part of nearby Greenfield Township]. The Townsite Act passed by Congress on November 5th, 1854 authorized Illinois landowner Samuel Butterfield to purchase township land east of Greenfield Township from John Fenton for $5 million dollars. butterfield sold his share in 1880 to Lewis Cass who donated it back to township trustees on February 26th, 1888.[1] On December 10th, 1899, Chicago's First Water Tower completed construction just south of present day Village Hall while thousandspeople watched from shorelines across Lake Michigan[2]. Prior to this event local newspapers reported that Chicago's new water tower would be called 'The Lady' due her striking appearance from atop her pedestal directly opposite main beachfront park[3][4]. For many years afterwards locals popularly referred to this location as 'The Lady Tower'. When newlyweds Eleanor Roosevelt (thefutureFirst ladyofthe United States)and Franklin D Roosevelt (president during World War II) visited Chicago during their honeymoon they stayed at McCormick Place Hotel which situates itself adjacent to The Lady Tower[5][6]. This event marks perhaps one occasion when public attention turned away from more important matters such as politics within our country towards more frivolously inclined activities like window dressing or wedding planning

In 1836, the United States acquired this area from the Canada Company and named it Wisconsin Territory. This territory included present-day Whitefish Bay as well as parts of what is now Michigan and Illinois. The first white people to live in this area were fur traders who came from Superior, Wisconsin. They traded with the local natives and collected furs that they sold in Great Britain. By 1839, a post office had been established at Whitefish Bay, and trading posts continued to be active until about 1870.
