The Wisconsin Air National Guard's 27th Airlift Wing, in Whitefish Bay, WI, is the only military airlift squadron stationed in the State of Wisconsin. The squadron provides sophisticated Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft for aerial refueling of United States Air Force and NATO missions. The Wing also flies an E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS) unit to provide real-time situational awareness to aircrews flying over Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The 27th Airlift Wing was activated on 1 May 1947 as the 3d Bombardment Group (Logistical Support). It was redesignated as the 27th Airlift Wing on 15 October 1951 when it became a combat wing and assigned to Ninth Air Force. On 20 July 1957, during a period of high tensions with Cuba, the wing changed its name again to the 3d Fighter Wing (Air Defense). Inactivated on 31 December 1992 as part of an overall restructuring within Ninth Air Force which eliminated all fighter wings in that command. Inactivated once again on 1 January 1994 when all Tactical Fighter Groups were reassigned away from RAF Upper Heyfordshire and amalgamated into Ninth Air Force under then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney's new Military Order of America organization. Redesignated asthe 3d Aircraft Control Group (Aircrew) on 1 June 2001 when 9/27 AIW became subordinate to 9/8 ACG at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio; both groups were composed entirely of USAF officers who had been transferred from Headquarters Third Army, Pentagon following its disbandment there two years earlier. On 16 November 2002 World Trade Center terrorist attacks took place; due to this event 9/27 AIW lost its AWACS unit but regained control over its airspace within two hours through use of stateofthedefense waiver authority granted by President George W Bush under Executive Order 13224. 9/27 AIW deployed an E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system unit from Elmendorf AFB Alaska during Operation Noble Eagle III during 29 September - 2 October 2008 in support of Operation Neptune's Spear; this was the first time that such a deployment had occurred outside North America sinceactivation days prior. This exercise tested defensive capabilities against potential threats emanating from Iraq or Afghanistan while also demonstrating connectivity between NORAD facilities across North America using maritime wireless technology operating outof Elmendorf AB

Whitefish Bay is a small town in the Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The first people to live in Whitefish Bay were the Menominee and Potawatomi Indians. Whitefish Bay was named for Captain John Fenton of the British ship "Dolphin" who sighted an bay on his return voyage from America in 1792. The town was platted in 1836 by Elisha Holmes and others as part of what would become the Town of Green Bay. A post office called WhitefishBay was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1865. The town became a village in 1907, and again became a city when it merged with Green Bay proper on January 1, 1970. The first school built here was located on Main Street near where present-day High School (now Whitefish Bay Middle) stands today. Mrs. Hannah Crouse donated land for this school which opened up September 10th, 1838Our pioneer educators: Revs Daniel Juhlman and Isaac Sneath taught morning classes while evening classes were offered by subscription until 1840When white men began coming to work on lumberjacks there were no school buildings so children had to attend public schools until1850 When grading lands changed hands some students migrated away so soon grades went down also attendance dropped off scaring away families not wanting their children around dirty streetsIn 1850 one acre out of 456 acres lot sold went to build our first high school building that still stands today also now used as offices for our daycare provider
