Weston, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Nicolet County. The population was 10,531 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Nicolet County by population size and also one of the smallest places in Wisconsin with a total land area of only 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²). Weston is home to two universities: The University of Wisconsin-Weston and the University ofWisconsin-Milwaukee. The first people to settle here were Germans who arrived around 1836 from what is now eastern Germany. They built houses on a small bluff overlooking the Fox River which they named "Munster" after their home country, Munster, Germany. In 1847, settlers from Illinois moved into this area and started calling it "Weston." This name stuck for many years because it was easy to remember for newcomers since there was no river running through it like there are in some other nearby settlements such as Milwaukee or Chicago (the first town in America). In 1873, when Milwaukee became an incorporated city, its officials decided that Weston should have its own City Hall so they renamed it "Weston." In 1930, when Weston's boundaries were changed to include all of Nicolet County except Beloit due to annexation byBeloit during that year's boundary revisions,[1] the name change applied only to Westonia Park Blocks - those blocks located east of I-94 between State Highway 439 and US 63 - not to Weston itself.[2] When Nicollet County was created on January 1st 1973, those blocks were again included within Weston's boundaries; however, until May 2nd 2013 when all new Nicolet County residents were registered,[3], westonians still referred to themselves as "Nicollet Countians".
