West Bend, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by George Washington Carver. The town is located on the Milwaukee River and was named after West Bend Township in Michigan. During the years it has been a center for agriculture, industry, and education. In recent years it has become an important community hub for the city of Milwaukee. The town's strengths include its strong economy and quality of life, which have helped make West Bend a popular place to live and work. The history of West Bend begins with George Washington Carver. Carver was born in 1847 in Bedford County, Kentucky. He worked as a farmhand before moving to Ohio in 1865 to join his family as a farmer. When he moved back to Illinois in 1868, he decided to move west and start a new life. He bought land near what is now West Bend, Wisconsin from John Cavanaugh in 1836. Carver began farming the land that would later be called West Bend Township. By 1830, he had developed a successful business selling goods made from corn, beans, flour, cheese, eggs, bacon, etc., at local markets throughout the area. In 1840 he married Sarah Laughlin and started families with her (three children). AfterSarah's death in 1850 due to complications from childbirth (she had three daughters), Carver continued farming with his son Daniel until his death in 1901. Daniel left behind a legacy of innovation that continues today: many products are made using genetically modified crops grown here such as soybeans and corn gluten meal that are not found anywhere else on Earth! In 1840-41 George Washington Carver built himself a home on present day State Road 516 just east of downtownwest bend WI - this home still stands today! This property would come into use as the first known post office building west of Chicago when it opened on October 12th 1840 under name "Carvers Post Office". The current structure was completed circa 1880s when carvers barn burned down causing extensive damage & two storeys were added replacing only one floor! A millstream running through this location produced flour for dinner tables all over centralisconsin during prohibition era- so much so some believe this millstream actually ran beneath Lake Michigan itself!! One can tour this historic site open daily starting at 9am or contact museum if interested (& receive $10 admission fee) The early residents did not have any tools/mechanism other than hand harvesting their foodstuffs so they used natural methods including digging ditches+making wells+watering plants=all done with hands! Today we enjoy produce available year round at grocery stores across centralWI thanks largely to these same techniques!!! After prohibition ended many farmers transitioned into trucking their cargo directly from warehouse to your door- which led directly to our present day economy!!!! It’s amazing how technology has totally changed our lives!!!!!
The area now known as West Bend was first settled by the La Crosse people in the late 18th century. The first white person to live in what is now West Bend was John Fitzpatrick, who arrived with his family in 1794. A year later, he and his wife, Sarah, started a small farm on the east side of town. By 1800, Fitzpatrick had several hundred acres of land within what is todayWest Bend. In 1836, a group of settlers from Wisconsin Territory north of Iowa founded a trading post near present-dayWaukesha County. That same year, members of the Weston family relocated from Illinois to start a new life in West Bend. Over time, other families moved into West Bend as well: The Bostons in 1904; the Cooks in 1908; and the Hiltons in 1912. The population ofWest Bend exploded after World War I when many farmers found new opportunities to grow crops due to increased demand for food during wartime clouds of gas created by Allied bombing raids over Europe. Afterward, business grew quickly at local businesses such as grocery stores and flour mills while homes were built up around downtown streets that are still frequented today by locals and visitors alike.
