In 1907, West Bend became an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council; it merged with Racine to form the present-day Milwaukee metropolitan area in 1998. West Bend, Wisconsin, is a small town in the central part of the United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Milwaukee River. West Bend is home to Mount Pleasant Cemetery and Park and has a rich history dating back to 1837. The first recorded settler in what would become West Bend was Isaac Brock who arrived in 1837 from Canada. In 1840, John Richardson founded the village of Brookfield on the west side of the Milwaukee River. Both settlements were short-lived due to competition from other towns in that area and by 1846 both had been abandoned. In 1847, Daniel Juhl moved from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin to start a new farm called Northwesternia on land that would later be known as West Bend. Juhl's farm became an early center for heavy industry and commerce in what would become West Bend because he developed a river ferry service between his farmstead and factories along the Milwaukee River.) By 1850, it had become clear that there was no future for either settlement so Juhl sold his property and returned to Manitowoc County where he continued farming until his death in 1865. In 1853, George Washington Carver purchased 10 acres of land northwest of downtown Westbind
West Bend was first settled in 1838 by farmers from Michigan. The town grew quickly, and in 1848 it became a village. In the early 1800s, West Bend was part of the Sauk County territory. On January 1, 1854, Sauk County was created as a separate county, and West Bend became its seat.
