West Bend, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern portion of Milwaukee County and is bordered by Ozaukee County to the north and east, Manitowoc County to the south, Waukesha County to the west and northeast, and Racine County to the northwest. The first settlement in what is now West Bend was made on March 14, 1836 when a group of men from Menomonee Falls purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) of land near present-day North Avenue and State Street for $10 each. The town was formally organized on December 15, 1837 with a meeting attended by nine residents. The first post office was established in West Bend on June 17, 1840. On December 15, 1847, another group of pioneers arrived in West Bend from Green Bay with an idea for building a mill on their new farmstead about four miles (6 kilometers) away called "Eagle Hill". They named their new community "West Bend" after their original farmstead which they had just acquired from John Deere Company president Isaac Eaton. But due to protests led by nearby residents who saw this as taking away resources that were needed for local development such as churches and schools, Eagle Hill became known as "East Side". In 1861 it changed its name again to "West Side" after businessmen James Wagoner and Abram Washington bought 380 acres (16 hectares) southeast of town between Superior Avenue and Lake Michigan Boulevard for $360 per acre ($15 million today). That same year Chicagoan George Pullman founded Pullman Palace Hotel in downtown West Side which later became one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations In 1907 property developer Julius Rosenwald donated 825 acres (309 hectares) including parts of what are now Broadway Park & Silver Spring Landing—now part of Downtown Milwaukee—to build his first shopping center which would become known as Rosenwald Plaza Shopping Center

The name "West Bend" is derived from a bend in the River West Branch (now Kinnickinnic River) which forms its eastern border. The first settlers to what is now West Bend were white men who arrived during and after the AmericanRevolutionary War and were seeking land grants that would allow them to farm and build homes. They named their new community after General George Washington, who had fought for America at Valley Forge. The original Post Office was established in 1784, and changes hands several times before it was transferred to Milwaukee in 1836. The first ship carrying immigrants to this area came downriver from Holland on July 4, 1847. Over 1,000 people disembarked here that day; many of them were farmers looking for new opportunities after years of being cramped up on dry land back home. This development led directly to downtown's current shape: Midtown has been gradually expanding northward ever since then - paralleling First Avenue southward until it meets University Drive just east of Milwaukee Yards mall which lies between Midtown/Uptown parkade and First Avenue/Downtown business districts today] . On November 16th 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his famous “Fourteen Points” speech while visiting Midwest Centerville IL where he proposed creating an organization called National Civic League which would promote Democratic Party candidates throughout America - something that would becomeKeystone XL later that year]. In 1927 Melvin Ladd founded Ladd’s Department Stores here - one ofWisconsin's first department stores open tothe public]. The closure of these stores left a vacuum which quickly became filled by Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Mitchell-Lenz store[closed 1958], opened by Sam Kenworthy Sr.[in 1959], followed by JCPenney [opened 1960] etc.; so much so that even without SearsRoebuck &Co.�s arrival downtown there still exists significant retail continuity throughout most if not all neighborhoods within miles... Today nearly every major retailer operating inside either First Ave./Downtown or Midtown corridors services both Easton Rd./Lake Michigan Blvd.-facing thoroughfares... Outstanding examples include Kohls (since 1971); Macy�ans (since 1978); Sears Roebuck & Co.�s Menard Place Mall - also home to large anchor tenants like Ford Motor Company,[opened 1984]; Meijer [opened 1987]; Applebees [closed 1990]; Kroger [- enlarged 1997][opened 2002] etc.] .
