The Wisconsin National Guard was activated on December 6, 1861, when the United States Congress created the 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. The regiment was mobilized and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment disbanded after the war. However, it wasn't until 1922 that the regiment's name was changed to the 9th Armored Cavalry Regiment. In 1942, a detachment of this regiment fought in World War II as part of Operation Overlord. After World War II, the regiment disbanded again and its members were re-organized into battalions and then regiments. Today, most of the unit's members serve with honor in their home states or countries abroad through military service organizations such as Army Reserve or Air National Guard units (although a few are stationed at Fort Knox).

West Bend is a town in Door County located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 26,859 at the 2010 census. West Bend began as a small farming community in 1873. It became an agricultural center during World War I because of its production of corn and other crops. In 1925, it incorporated as a town and has since grown to include a population of over 100,000 people. The Badger Football team is one of the most well-known teams in Wisconsin and has won six state championships (1948-51; 1957-58; 1966-70; 1974-77). Despite these successes, progress has been made against social disadvantage over time according to ERS data: "Since 2007...the percentage [of residents] living below poverty line has dropped from 27% to 17%, while Black Earth Village's rate remains above 20%. Overall...the Milwaukee metropolitan area resident income level increased between 2007 and 2016."

The town of West Bend,Wisconsin was founded by the Dutch in 1795. The area that is now West Bend was part of the Racine County until 1836 when it became part of the newly created Milwaukee County. The first post office in West Bend was established in 1835. In 1847, a sawmill and grist mill were built in what is now West Bend and the first house in town was erected on this site. In 1870, a flour mill and bakery were built and around this time, several churches were also constructed. The community quickly grew as a result of its location by the Fox River and its many mills. By 1913, there were over 200 residents living in West Bend. In 1915, due to World War I,West Bend became an Army base and during this time it experienced some growth as soldiers brought their families with them. After the war ended,the community slowly declined but resumed growth after being designated as a Village by Wisconsin Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services for economic development purposes. In 1966,West Bend incorporated as a city and has continued to grow since then with numerous advancements such as its current designation as a "Global City". Today,West bend offers residents all types of services including education; employment opportunities; recreation; health care; shopping; restaurants; nightlife activities and much more!

The population was 561 at the time of its incorporation as a town in 1836, and it grew to over 1,000 by 1840. In 1854, it merged with neighboring Racine to form the city of Milwaukee.
