The United States Air Force has beenDeployed in many places around the World. Some of these deployments have been long lasting and some shorter, but all of them have left a lasting impact on the community and people who live there. The Deployments that have had the longest stays in West Bend are those of the 1st Bomb Wing stationed at Milwaukee Air National Guard Base from 1951 to 1957 and then again from 1971 to 1997. The 1st Bomb Wing was originally activated as an airmail service unit at Milwaukee Municipal Airport on December 12, 1941. After Pearl Harbor, the wing’s mission became providing combat support for American armies in Europe during World War II. The wing moved to RAF Wickenham, England in May 1945 after completing its training under Eighth Air Force Commander General Curtis LeMay. The wing provided aerial refueling and bombardment support for Allied ground forces until it disbanded on September 15, 1947 following the Inactivation of USAAF European Command. In 1951, when MILWAUKEE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE was activated as a USAF installation, Headquarters 5th Bombardment Wing (5 BW) moved from Langley AFB Virginia to MILWAUKEE AFB with itsater group 2-2dHeavy which was constituted July 24th 1946 as elements supporting modern fighter jet operations within newly activated USAF Tactical Air Commands (TACs). Upon activation of NATO's Thunderclap Defense system over Western Europe on April 10th 1952Milwaukee AFB assumed command of TAC No 3 European Task Force also known as “Athenaeum” formed outa Major General James Eamey’s Twelfth AF Group HQ flying Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircraft assigned thereto with operational control from Washington Dulles AAF VA under Tactical Air Command untilactivated effective October 16 1948 with headquarters redesignated Headquarters StrategicAir Forces Europe (HAFE) situation Room 318A Edinburgh UK 6LtColJohn Sargent commanding 1BW equipped Douglas DC-3ER Stratofortresses arriving at Milwaukee May 12/1951 were #'d up thru final assembly & delivered by major Henson Jun 13/51; first flight May 26/51 . Denver test facility Oct 20/51 – Jan 2 52 saw operation of first true bomber airplane flown by Col Deutch Feb 18/52 . Denver Jan 25/52 became operationalAllahabad Aug 17/52 As part of Operation Neptune's Spear employment against North Vietnam starting mid Dec 51 1BW flew missions including: ? subsidy truck bombing Truckee Reservoir Apr 9 & 10 53 ? bombing mission near Kimhae District Nov 17 53 ? strike against Song Be Province Mtns Apr 9 54? strike against Son Doi Province Jan 7 55 reassignment Dec 3 56 1BW deployed back home for final time Sept 15 57 per order signed by President Eisenhower

West Bend is a city in the Wisconsin area that lies near the border of Illinois and Michigan. The population was 14,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now West Bend was Father Marquette in 1673. In 1836, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois set up a settlement here after escaping from their Mormon leader’s death sentence in Missouri. The town grew rapidly and by 1853 it had an estimated population of 30 people. In 1866, West Bend became part of distinction as one of two communities in Wisconsin designated as “Secondaries of Commerce” due to its importance for trade with Michigan and Illinois. In 1907, when Milwaukee County disbanded and became Racine County, West Bend received a charter from Racine County Executive John Prentice making it an incorporated village under our jurisdiction. With strong civic spirit and activity through its many social organizations such as the American Legion (1910-present), Elks Lodge #2 (1896-1910), Knights Templar #1 (1896-1900), First United Methodist Church (1898-present), Boys & Girls Club (1920-present) and Kiwanis Club (1920s)), West bend has always been an active community! City Council meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday each month at 7:00pm followed by public hearings on proposed ordinances which are then considered for passage or rejection at vote by City Councilmembers who attend openings preceded by “Ayes”/”Noes” votes negating any amendments offered during floor debate; these hearings occur before all other business items which happen throughout regular meeting day where all citizens are allowed to speak without interruption provided they do not move forward with any amendments during open session deliberations where all citizens may also speak without interruption provided they do not move forward with any Amendments until finally voting concludes either Aye or No
