On January 3rd 1942, the USS Abraham Lincoln (BB-41) left Naval Base Milwaukee with a shipment of military supplies for the US Marines stationed in Iceland. West Allis, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 8,453 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in the state and its largest municipality by area. The city is located in the southern half of Milwaukee County and shares borders with neighboring Waukesha to the east, Rockford to the north, and Kenosha to the west. It is bordered by Racine on one side and Brown Deer on the other. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Allis were French traders who arrived in 1663 during their expedition under Governor Samuel de Champlain. The French built Fort La Crosse in 1763 as part of a fur trade convoy sent from Montreal through Lake Superior towards Quebec City. At that time it was known as " villages without water". In 1836, when Wisconsin became a United States territory, West Allis became part of Racine Township which also included present-day Brown Deer Township and parts of Kenosha County. In 1845, Racine township became all land west of State Street including what is now downtown West Allis except for a small tract that forms part of Milwaukee's eastern border with Waukesha County. This annexation created an urban area that spanned both sides of Milwaukee River within city limits until 1966 when those boundaries were redefined as they are today due to growth along I-794 corridor between Milwaukee and Chicago that has enlarged westward since then (see History of Milwaukee). In 1905–06, two boys named Harry Weiland (1885-1966) and Clifford Weiland (1907-1978) were working as janitors at Mile High School while their fathers were attending law school nearby at Marquette University Law School; they decided to open their own business - Weiland Cleaners - after hearing about "the best cleaning service in town." With better transportation options available than walking or driving long distances for cleaning services then available, this led to them becoming one of America's earliest commercial cleaners before deregulation caused prices for many types of services to rise rapidly during the early 21st century; however we still offer high quality professional cleaning services today! In 1960s there was no grocery store near downtown so people would walk miles from home just for food; later on there was a grocery store but it closed down because nobody wanted groceries close to their homes so much anymore! In 2002 Midwest Grocery moved out west across I-94 into an old industrial complex next door to Ford Field football stadium which made more space for retail development including a movie theater etc.; however this development did not go well due lacklustre customer service skills among employees who had been employed there since 1978 (!), closed down in 2017 after years struggles with debt/funding issues etc.; so much for 'The People's Store'. Downtown West Allis experienced rapid growth following World War II when thousands came here seeking work during peacetime because war profitered greatly from manufactured items such as munitions production imported from abroad; restaurants opened up soon afterwards catering specifically to wartime veterans like Pee Wee Herman’s Hamburglar’s hamburger stand which continues operation even today - witness Traffic Light Cafe upstairs where you can enjoy your favorite Hamburglar’s meal any timeof day! West Allis is a city in the Wisconsin County seat of Milwaukee. The population was 74,553 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Milwaukee County and one of its five cities. West Allis was founded by German immigrants in 1839 as Racine. The name originated from a now-defunct paper mill located in what is today West Allis. The first post office in what is now West Allis was established on July 7, 1840, by Isaac Klein and others under the direction of James Gadsden. Racine was renamed West Allis on October 10, 1841 when settlers from Racine arrived here to found a new town following up on an earlier pledge made by George Washington Kappler to rename all towns which had been surveyed along his route from Philadelphia to Milwaukee after various places he had visited or crossedroads he had passed through while campaigning for election as president of the United States. The immediate area around present-day West Allis grew out of fur trader settlements established along Lake Michigan during the 18th century. One such settlement, Dubuque, was organized as a village on April 6, 1781 by Simon Calumet and other East Indian traders with the help of French fur traders René de La Ville and Antoine de la Motte Cadillac. By 1800 Dubuque had grown large enough that it petitioned Canada for independence from Great Britain and became part of Quebec after its independence from France in 1791; however, due to Native American attacks over time Dubuque reverted back to British rule until it became an open frontier township within Milwaukee County following Indian Removal occurred ceded lands northward to Minnesota following their war against Ulysses S Grant’s forces at Wounded Knee (1863). In 1837 John Hargrave purchased 567 acres northwest of present-day West Allis for $6 per acre newly surveyed for farming purposes near Green Bay; this land would become known as Hargrave’s Prairie throughout its history because early settler John Hargrave directed most aspects of development including naming rights for local rivers and streams named after him including Hargrave Creek (later Cook creek) running through present day downtown Waukesha and into Dane county. In total 111 lots were sold totaling 4 square miles with sizes ranging between 1/2 mile to 2 miles wide frontage on either side of major intersections: Ashland avenue NW corner Herron avenue NE corner State street SW corner Clinton avenue SE corner then east 3 blocks across current day Cedarburg Avenue NE corner Manitowoc avenue NW corner White oak drive SE corner Hargrave’s Prairie served as an important center for transportation necessary for accessing surrounding farmlands during what would be characterized as Wisconsin’s early agricultural boom years; moreover it remained so until discontinued passenger rail service began operations southbound via I-794E/Watkins Road/Milwaukee state Rd just east of downtown Waukesha operated by Amtrak starting August 15th 1964 making this period prior theretoWI's only major commercial center without interurban bus service
