West Allis, Wisconsin is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 20,391 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County. West Allis was platted in 1836 and named for General David Hull Westmoreland. The first post office in West Allis was established in 1837. In 1865, the town became part of the newly created Racine County when Racine County was formed from parts of Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties. In 2000, the city of West Allis merged with its neighboring towns to form a new city-county government which still operates as an separate municipality within Milwaukee County. After serving two terms as president (1865-1869), he returned to his farm and business interests until running for office again in 1872 when he won election as mayor of Racine (now known as Kenosha). He remain mayor until 1893 when he ran for Congress but lost to incumbent John D'Arcy Stevenson II due to Republican Party restrictions on candidate self-financing which helped contribute to Stevenson's successful reelection that year despite losing most of Racine's black residents – one reason why Waukesha became majority white during this time frame too.
