West Allis is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 97,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Milwaukee County after Milwaukee. The first permanent settler in what is now West Allis was Jacob Hennepin in 1836. The town began to form as a village on November 1, 1854 when the western half ofMilwaukee Township merged with part of North Shore Township to form what would become West Allis. In 1855, John Blythe donated land east of the river to make way for what would become West Allis. In 1870, construction began on the Milwaukee Road which connected Chicago and Prairie du Chien; west of downtown and through what became downtown West Allis it continued until 1899 when it routed around downtown via State Street and Wabash Avenue instead. This made west side development much faster than along present day State Street which offered more opportunities for retail development before becoming an arterial road less traveled by commuters connectingMilwaukee with Racine and Fox Point southwesterly both served primarily as bedroom communities for west side professionals rather than residential areas for working class families or farmers who benefited from access to Interstate 94 just north of town center where farmland ceased being valuable after Lake Michigan filled up
