Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Waupacton and its meaning is "place where two rivers join." The townsite was laid out in 1854 by George H. Waupacton and named for his wife Winifred. The first settler to arrive in what is now Wauwatosa was John Jacob Astor who arrived on July 16, 1836. He donated land to the town and built a home there called "Astoria". A post office called Wauwatosa was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1865, J.P. Morgan founded the Milwaukee Railroad as part of his efforts to bring railroad traffic into the city of Milwaukee; he named his new station "Wauwatosa" after his wife's hometown of Wausaton (now West Allis). In 1893, Wauwatosa became a city when it incorporated as part of Milwaukee County; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 1907, an amusement park called "The Park" opened up on North Avenue near State Street; it closed down in 1951 after being damaged by fire. In 1925, Wauwatosa organized its own school system which continues today as Prairie View A&M University System's K-12 education division with campuses located throughoutWI - including one campus located inside of Wauwatosa - and online learning options for both undergraduate students and graduate students statewide via Prairie View Online Learning (PVO).
