The Wisconsin Navy Department was founded in 1854 with the goal of providing naval support for the state’s growing economy. The department has continued to play a vital role in the state’s defense since that time, and its gift history is reflective of this. The first gifts from the Wisconsin Navy Department were donated by Captain John Fitch and his wife, Mrs. Nancy Fitch, in 1855. This donation was in honor of Governor Julius La Follette’s visit to Milwaukee and the inauguration of his new cabinet members. At that time, Captain Fitch was serving as commander of the USS Milwaukee (1848-49), which had been donated by Mr. La Follette during his gubernatorial campaign. subsequent donations from Captains John Wadleigh and George Moulton followed in 1861 and 1863 respectively. These donations represented an important shift for the Wisconsin Navy Department as it became increasingly focused on defending our state against external threats rather than simply providing naval support for economic development initiatives. In 1865, Commodore George Budd donated two warships to the Wisconsin Navy Department – USS Brooklyn (1862) and USS Quincy (1866). These gifts were a significant step forward for the department as they demonstrated their commitment to preserving our navy’s resources while also expanding its reach into new areas of operations. After Commodore Budd’s death in 1868, Admiral David Dixon Porter took over as Commodore of the Wisconsin Navy Department until his retirement in 1892. During Admiral Porter’s tenure, he created a number of key programs including Naval Air Station at Plattsburgh (later NAS Whidbey Island), which served as an important training ground for both American Marines and Korean pilots during World War II; and construction of USS Pewaukee (1910) which helped contribute to America’s entrance into World War I. In total, Admiral Porterdonated thirty-six vessels to the WI Navy Department between 1890-1912!
