In 1854, the first gun show took place in town and it was held at the Masonic Temple on East State Street. There were also talks about having a pistol show at the High School but those plans never came to fruition. In 1865, the first shooting range was opened up on North Main Street by Simeon Hutton Jr.. After that shooting range closed down in 1924, it was reopened by Mr./Mrs.(first name unknown) who operated it until they sold it off in 1957 to Gussie Lunsford who continued operations until 1978 when it closed again because of too much competition from other businesses including an auto dealership on North State Street which became known as “Wauwatosa” Auto Mall

Wauwatosa is a town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waukesha County. The Town of Wauwatosa was organized on February 15, 1834 and named after George Washington Waubenton. The first post office in what is today the town was established on March 17, 1835. The name “Wauwatosa” comes from an incident during the War of 1812 when a British warship ran into rocks off shore and its crew thought they had found an Indian village because there were high piles of wood nearby! The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa was John Fetterman who built his home on land he purchased from the Sauk people in 1836. In 1840, Oliver Ames arrived with his family and settled here also. Other early settlers included Gideon Posey (1841-1901) who operated a flour mill and Jonas Sisson (1844-1927) who farmed land adjacent to present day downtown Wauwatosa. This area now includes most of Downtown Wauwatosa as well as portions of North Side and South Side streets between First Street and Superior Avenue north to State Street east to Elm Street south to West Side streets between Milwaukee Avenue west to Racine Boulevard east to Superior Avenue north then down First Street east to Today’s intersection with State Street south then across Today’s intersection with Racine Boulevard south then up Racine Boulevard east out towards Appleton where he later died at age 93 years old. In 1855, John Dickey bought 160 acres surrounding present day Downtown Wausokosha for $10 per acre from James Nielsen which made it possible for him to establish this large farming community that would soon include over 1,000 residents including many wealthy farmers such as Levi Strauss & Co., Gustavus Adolphus Winthrop & Sons., Theo Christensen & Son., Augustus Kelley & Sons., Samuel Hubbard & Sons.. By 1890, nearly half of all merchants in Chicago were based inWI -over one hundred families controlled more than fifty businesses located throughout downtown WBUS . With rapid growth came new housing developments – Prairie View Apts., Imperial Courts rd., Union Ave.–all helping contribute materially (or not so materially)to Wealthy Men's Social Club building on High Court Square until it burned down circa 1912; Elisha Beecher House 1911; Masonic Temple 1902; First Methodist Episcopal Church 1893; prominent citizens' homes like Mrs DeVos 1905-present…………….
Wauwatosa was first settled by the Dutch in 1634. The town was named after a nearby waterfall, Wauwatosa Falls. In 1851, the town was incorporated and renamed Milwaukee. It became a city in 1903.
