Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is home to the United States Army Garrison of Fort George Meade. The fort was established in 1854 and is one of the oldest military installations in the United States. The garrison has been involved in various deployments throughout its history. The first deployment of the USArmy here was during World War II when Fort George Meade was used as a training ground for troops from all over the country. After World War II, Fort George Meade became an active base for operations in Korea and Vietnam. From 1967-1973, it served as a mainbase for Operation Rolling Thunder which aimed to eradicate all North Vietnamese insurgents from South Vietnam. In 2003, Fort George Meade played host to NATO'sOperation Allied Force which took place in Yugoslavia. In 2007, it also hosted American forces during OPERATION Neptune's Spear which was conducted against al-Qaeda members within Afghanistan. Today, Fort George Meade plays an important role within the defense of Wauwatosa and its surrounding area. It houses both UH-1 Hueys and M2 Bradley fighting vehicles along with other various equipment and weaponry needed for peacekeeping patrols and combat operations around the city limits. Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a small town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 21,722 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Wauwatosa County. The name "Wauwatosa" comes from the Ojibwe word "wáwátasa", meaning "place of great trees." The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa was John Doremus, who arrived in 1836. The present-day town was platted in 1846 by John Fetterman and James McKay. Businesses that have been located in Wauwatosa include Boeing Co., MillerCoors Brewing Co., M&M's Chocolate Shoppe, Jamba Juice Company, and Sears Roebuck & Co.. In addition to its economic importance, Wauwatosa has also been home to several schools which have educated many local residents: UW–Milwaukee (formerly Marquette University), Green Bay Technical College (now Wisconsin Technical University), and Racine Area Vocational Institute (RACI). On April 15th, 2015 voters in Wauwatosa passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Park City into the city limits of Milwaukee. This occurred as part of an overall effort by city leaders to consolidation efforts across all municipalities within their boundaries.

It was in 1847 that the town of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin was founded. It is now a city and the largest community in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town was named after General James Wauwatosa, who led an army against Native Americans in 1846. The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa was Isaac Hoadley. Over time, other settlers arrived, and by 1860 there were over 100 people living in Wauwatosa. The community began to grow rapidly, and by 1900 it had reached a population of 2000 people. In 1907, the city of Milwaukee annexed Wauwatosa into its jurisdiction, and as a result, the community lost much of its importance. However, it continued to grow and become one of the most popular places to live in Milwaukee County. In 1970, the city enacted a law that banned smoking on public surfaces within five miles of schools. This law remains in effect today.
