Wausau is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located along the Kettle River. The population was 10,711 at the 2000 census. Wausau is the county seat of Winnebago County and it is also the largest city in Winnebago County by population size. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wausau were French fur traders in 1672-3. They named their new settlement Fort de la Pointe after a point on the Kettle River where they had stopped for supplies while traveling downriver from Superior, Minnesota Territory. The fort was garrisoned by Captain Pierre Lescarbot and his men until 1759 when it was abandoned due to British military pressure on the then French possessions around that time period. In 1846, Abraham Lincoln appointed John Prentice as superintendent of Indian Affairs in Winnebago County with authority over all Native American tribes east of Lake Michigan excepting those under control of United States cavalry troops based at Fort Snelling near Minneapolis; this area included most of what is now Wausau Township and part of present-day Marathon County. In 1852, one year after Lincoln's inauguration as president, Prentice ordered surveyors to begin work on a road from Green Bay via Manitowoc to Chicago; this road would eventually be called Highway 66 or I-94 today. In 1853, Congress authorized $10,000 for a sawmill project at present-day Slinger Valley which would produce lumber for local use and export primarily to England and Europe. The mill was built but never started because there were too many problems with water transportation from nearby rivers and too few trees available for lumber production in wintertime; it finally closed its doors in 1865 following heavy damage caused by a tornado that season nearpresent- day Oshkosh). Wausau, Wisconsin is a small town located in the upper Midwest. The community was founded on December 12, 1856, by John and Rebecca Waugh. The name "Wausau" comes from the Ojibwe word waosi meaning "place where the Seven Sisters are found." The seven sisters are an Australian natural resources company that mined coal and other minerals in what is now Wausau. When the United States acquired most of the Great Lakes region in 1853, Wausau became part of the new Northwest Territory. On July 1, 1857, it became a village under the jurisdiction of Chicago. In 1906, it was merged with neighboring Racine to form Racine-Wausau-West Allis. John Waugh played a significant role in developing Wausau and its economy. He was born in 1795 in Louthshire County, England and died on December 12, 1865 at age 83 years old. His parents were James Waugh and Sarah Jane (née Cockburn). After leaving school at 16 he took over his father's grocery store in nearby East Troy (now La Crosse). By 1830 James had opened a second store in downtown Wausau which he continued to run until his death four years later. In 1847 John married Rebecca baptized into Christianity at St Mary's Church just east of town on February 15th following her conversion from Judaism observance while living with her family near Green Bay. They had three children: James Fircher (1849-1937), who also ran their grocery store; John Hesseling (1852-1912), who worked as a bank teller; and Sarah Ann Hesseling (1855-1929), who married George Nibley Jr., son of George Nibley Sr.. Their only daughter Rebecca died young at 8 months old due to pneumonia contracted during childbirth when she was 2 years old. John Hesseling arrived in America around 1847 as one of about 250 immigrants seeking opportunity after fleeing religious persecution back home in Germany duringthe Protestant Reformation era In 1850 he started working for his brother James at their grocery store before moving up through the ranks to become manager by 1870 By 1861 he owned both stores outright including land north of town along High Street . He served as president pro tempore for West Allis Township Committee from 1863 until 1865 then serving as Selectman from 1870 until his death . During this time he also developed a large acreage east of town along Menomonee River which included what is now known as North Park . Additionally John developed irrigation systems which helped grow cornfields into important agricultural communities across much of Northwestern America From these beginnings many families have contributed significantly to local culture and commerce today including several generations still involved with business or farming
