HC 1stWisconsin National Guard participated in various operations during World War II including liberation of Saigon from Japanese occupation on April 30, 1945; battle for France on May 8-10; campaign against Japan across Asia September 25-October 9; invasion of Normandy June 6-8; and liberation of Holland July 20-24. On November 15, 1951 HC 1stWisconsin National Guard detachment moved to Camp Randall Northeast to become elements under command of First United States Army Reserve Command when that reserve command became available for assignment to active duty in Korea following North Korean invasions of South Korea August 29-September 15. Following withdrawal from Korea due to demobilization late in 1951, HC 1stWisconsin National Guard detachment relocated to Ft Dodge Iowa January 10-15 before being reassigned back to Iowa February 9-13 as elements under command First United States Army Reserve Command when that reserve command became available for assignment to active duty in Vietnam following North Vietnamese invasions of South Vietnam March 8-April 2. Following withdrawal from Vietnam due to demobilization late in 1975, HC 1stWisconsin National Guard detachment relocated back home to Wausau until its dissolution effective date which is October 14, 1965.

The population of Wausau was over 100,000 in 2007. The history of Wausau began with a small farming community called "Brynne" that sits atop a hill overlooking the river that flows through it. In 1836, missionaries from Sweden arrived in what is now Wausau and started to preach Christianity to the local Native Americans. They built a small chapel near Brynne and baptized many natives into Christianity. The first post office was established in Brynne in 1841, and soon after settlers began moving into the area around Brynne. By 1870, there were more than 60 houses within a radius of 5 miles (8 km) of where Brynne sat. There were also several stores and churches located nearby. In 1865, when Wausau became an official municipality, it had a population of about 10 people. In 1907, when WI became an open-air primary school system with standardized testing requirements for all students in each municipality throughout our state, Wausau became one of the first cities to be included as part of this program!
