Wausau is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Waukesha River. The population was 10,544 at the 2010 census. The village of Wausau and portions of the city of Milwaukee are also within Wausau's boundaries. The area now comprising Wausau was first settled by people about 1775 as part of the Potawatomi Nation. In 1836, it became part of Racine County and in 1851 it became one of twelve townships in Racine County. On January 1, 1907, it merged with its neighbor to the north, East Chisago, to form a new town called Wausau Township which still exists to this day outside of Milwaukee County proper. The first settler in what is now Wausau was James Hickey who came overland from Ireland in August 1775 with his family and others under Captive Run for trade with the Native Americans including some Potawatomi tribal members living near Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. A post office called Hickey Springs was established here on December 15, 1835 by John Dickey (1777-1859), an early white settler and brother-in-law of James Hickey Sr., along with eight other settlers including five men from Canada named Neilson (Norman) McGillivray (1783-1837), David Murdoch (David Neely) (1806-1892), Alexander McMurtry (Athanasius McNaughtie) (1800-1886), George Macdonald (George Macdonald)(1793-1864). In 1856, Green Bay opened up land where present day downtown WI stands; however most wagon trains coming through this area stopped at or near Eaddy's Ford before continuing on their way westward across Wisconsin into Illinois Territory beyond today's Nebraska border eastward to Chicago Illinois Territory then south into Iowa Territory before finally reaching Illinois once more at Rock Island Arsenal near Chicago Illinois Territory line just days ahead of General US President Abraham Lincoln's April 12th inauguration as president that same year which helped spur Unionist support against American Civil War efforts by pro northern forces led by Gen Robert E Lee among others
