Wausau, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Yankton County. The population was 24,853 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1854 by Germans on land granted to them by the United States government. It has since been enlarged several times, most recently by annexing neighboring townships in 1922. Wausau is home to Wausau State University and various other cultural attractions. The early history of Wausau can be traced back to 1824 when German settlers from Germany arrived in what is now Yankton County. They were inspired to settle because they believed that they would have a better future if they lived near a major portage which would connected the Great Lakes with Europe. The area where Wausau now stands was first occupied by the Sioux River people who hunted and gathered natural resources such as game, fish, and lumber. In 1834, Russian traders discovered gold along the Missouri River and began trading with Native Americans in what is now Dakota Territory. This led to more settlers coming through Wausau looking for new opportunities outside of their homes countrymen who did not want their land taken over by others. In 1854, German immigrants traveling on wagon trains rode through Yankton County on their way northward into Canada after being given land grants by President James Krieger as part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which aimed to relocate all Native American nations living west of Ohio into reservations across North America under US jurisdiction until such time that those nations had peacefully disappeared (the removal process officially ended in 1865). When these pioneers reached what is now Wausau they were excited to find a place where they could start anew and build new life after years of living among hostile Native Americans who had previously made them targets for attack or theft during their travel through eastern Minnesota and western Ontario - an experience that some survivors called “a long journey into death” In order for this group of newcomers to succeed there were certain requirements met including good farming skills, strong work ethic, self-reliance, accurate knowledge about European culture and politics which helped shape many aspects of later American life including education reform movements like abolitionismand women's suffrage which occurred concurrently throughout America during this time period The town quickly emerged as one of the leading agricultural centres within southeastern Wisconsin due its location between two major waterways – Lake Superior and Lake Michigan – both providing ample water resources necessary for crop production while also having access to surrounding forests for lumbering purposes . As Wausau grew it became known for its exports especially wheat flour which was transported downriver from Yankton County via riverboats before being shipped offloaded onto barges destined for points east . By 1890 wheat acreage had grown so much that demand began increasing for larger dams capable of holding more water so mills could be built inland insteadHQ building materials continued shipping downriver until 1913 when navigation changed midway upriver resulting in an increase in Erie Canal traffic causing prices on exported goods skyrocketing causing local entrepreneurs like John Larkin Sr .to set up shop making wagons (an event still commemorated annually at Larkin Park downtown) exporting items such as coal , lead pipes & other heavy metal products directly back upstream HQ finally put an end to shipping operations thanks largely to WWI when large quantities became available domestically HQ however some small businesses remain active today such as Larkin's Hardware

Wausau, Wisconsin is a small city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Waukesha County. It is located on the eastern bank of the Kankakee River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Milwaukee and about 50 miles (80 km) north of Chicago. The population was 508 at the 2010 census, down from 524 at the 2000 census. The first human beings to set foot in what is now Wausau were French voyageurs who passed through in 1763. The first settler in what is now Wausau was John Hays, a fur trader and self-taught Methodist preacher who built a log cabin on his property in 1824. At that time, only a few hundred people lived along the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1827, businessman Anthony Thorndike purchased land northeast of present day Wausau and began building what would become known as Thorndike Dam–the largest dam in America at that time. In 1853, following passage by Congress of an act authorizing appropriations for building up defenses against insurrection within our limits, banker Jacob Riis founded the town site on land donated by Thorndike downstream from his damsite development project to provide access to trade with points further upriver for settlers seeking opportunity and growth near their new home away from persecution back then during this difficult period during American history when many northern states were struggling economically due to gold rushes taking place all over North America including California where Sacramento lay just south of Wausau at this time also during these times there was much violence going on between Native Americans and European settlers as well as between various gangs or factions vying for control over resources such as lumber or other goods being produced hereabouts especially around this area which led eventually to conflicts leading ultimately to full blown wars later on such as those fought throughout Minnesota etc.) This situation continued until after World War II when most residents had left or been pushed out following large areas being burned off by firestorms caused byindustrial activities particularly oil refineries which continues today affecting parts adjacent to Milwaukee etc.) Today, remnants of early settlements can still be seen scattered throughout present day rural areas southwest/northeast of downtown Wausau with some evidence dating back prior to 1830s including evidenceof log cabins used by early residents such as Jonathan Edwards who settled nearby Palmyra Prairie about two miles west/northwestof today’s downtown core along then current Highway 362 just south/southwestof Palmyra Prairie Schoolhouse having been abandoned but not destroyed like so many others during this time period yet still standing examples include both Greenbush & Westfall Cemeteries located southeast/southwestof today’s downtown core next door each other also remaining undamaged since 1800s while Appleton Historic District located immediately northwestNW adjoining German Village historic district remains one ofAmerica’s oldest continuously occupied communities dating back more than 1000 years)
The first European to come to Wausau was Jean Nicolet in 1781. He founded the town on the west side of the Mississippi River and named it after himself, Nicoletville. The first post office was established in 1834. In 1854, the town became a city and was named Wausau.
