Waupun is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Waupun is the largest town in Door County by population. The first Europeans to visit Waupun were French missionaries in 1769. Jesuit priest Jacques Marquette and his party traveled through Door County on their way from Green Bay to specify the route of a North American fur trade route they hoped to establish. They camped near present-day Waupun on July 26, 1769, and built a log cabin there that still stands today. The first permanent settler in what is now Door County was Nicholas Carrosse with his family in 1836. He imported European-style farm buildings from Milwaukee and began laying out roads and selling land to settlers as well as building churches and other infrastructure such as schools and stores. In 1849, he donated an acre (0.40 km²) of land for the erection of a Methodist church which became known as Carrosse Chapel after him or his wife Charity (née Carpenter). The first Protestant church in Door County was chartered on October 13, 1856 by Judge Augustus Kelley under the name "Waupun Presbyterian Church." In 1865, territorial Governor Isaac Stevens granted township status to what is now Waupun Township; this gave residents of adjacent townships increased voting rights with respect to school board decisions affecting them directly rather than via village trustees who had been appointed by Stevens primarily for political reasons related to agricultural interests within those townships vis-à-vis neighboring villages which were then all farmland ringed by dairy farms. This change also allowed for more comprehensive development plans for these townships without having village leaders making final decisions about where new homes would be built or how services would be integrated into local communities typically controlled by farmers/township officials responsible only for providing essential domestic needs like grocery shopping and mail service locally while villagers relied increasingly upon Interstate Highway traffic which caused gridlock on important rural routes essential for community growth during this time period

Waupun was founded by German immigrants in 1836 and named after the Hauswasser River which flows through the town. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1840, Waupun became a part of the newly formed state of Minnesota and its first governor, Isaac Stevens, appointed Waupun's first Methodist minister. The lumber industry played a significant role in Waupun's history. Lumber from the local sawmills helped to build many homes and businesses throughout the area during the 1800s and into the 1900s. The mills closed around 1930 but left behind an important technological legacy that has been used by several other companies throughout Milwaukee County including Lake Zurich Corporation and Target Corporation. Today, several cultural attractions remain associated with Waupun including its annual Moose Jaw Music Festival which takes place in early July across from downtown; its annual agricultural fair which occurs in late May or early June; as well as its historic buildings such as its courthouse and jail which are open to tours every day of the year except for Christmas Day.
