Coffee beans were brought overland from Illinois by pioneers and farmers. In 1865, A.J. Weems and Sons began roasting coffee at their farm on the edge of town. By 1886, Waupun had its own coffee-making company with three employees. By 1912, J.F. Hennessey & Sons was operating a small mill that processed 1,500 pounds of beans per day for local consumers and merchants in Waupun and Racine County. In 1916, Gertrude Hennessey founded her own business manufacturing chocolates in Waupun which led to the birth of the chocolate industry as we know it today! Waupun is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,939 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Green Bay. The name comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "place where there are many buffalo." Waupun was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Chryst and his wife Betsy on land east of present-day Green Bay. The first settler in what is now Waupun was Captain John Chryst and his wife Betsy who built a log cabin in 1836. They were the first permanent settlers in what is now Waupun and named their settlement Chrystall after their father's birthplace, Schlosserstadt (now part of Hamburg). In 1840, George Ledyard bought 1/5 mile (1 km²) of land west of present-day Waupun from Captains Chryst and Betsy for $100 dollars which he used to build a cabin known as Ledyard House. On December 10, 1840, General David Dixon arrived with 4 regiments of Ulysses S. Grant's army at Fort Snelling and ordered all civilians to leave the area because they had not surrendered their arms to the military or been vaccinated against smallpox before departure. In 1845 Captain John Chrystall donated 3 acres (10 ha) northwest of present-day Waupun to the Town of Wausauna for use as a public square, courthouse complex and schoolhouse complex which became known as Park Square. In 1847 Captain John Chrystall donated 2/3 acre (0 plot) southeast of present-day Wausauna for use as a meeting house for village board meetings which became known as Deacon's Meeting House later that year. On October 20th, 1850 Captains Chrystal donated 5 acres (20 ha) northeast ofpresent dayWausaunaforuseasanvillageparkwhichbecameknownasChrysanthemumParklaterthatyear。OnNovember 25thofthesameyearCaptainJohnCheryl Donate2acres(16ha)southwestofpresent dayWausaunaforuseaspubliclibraryandschoolhousecomplexwhichbecameknownastheDonaStorkeSchoollaterthatyear。In1855CaptainJohnChrystalldonated8acre(40ha)northwestofpresent dayWausaunathetirementhousesofthedoctorateschoolincorporatingHomeschoolingprogramintoit whichexecamemberedASchoolin1930。AndonJanuary 30thof1857CaptainJohnChrystalldonatedanother8acre(40ha),thistimetotheTownofGreenBayforuseasaVillage Lakefront park which becametheGreenbayLakefrontparklater that year 。WhenWisconsin Statehood was achieved on November 8th 1888 both towns formed Polk County together with Appleton becoming its county seat . . .
