The Wisconsin Army National Guard was activated in 1907. The unit was redesignated the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry on November 1, 1916. The battalion became part of the 9th Infantry Division on February 14, 1940 and was activated as a brigade combat team at Camp Randall in Madison on July 17, 1940. The brigade Combat Team then served as an attached unit to the 7th Infantry Division from December 8, 1941 to May 15, 1942. On June 24, 1942 the brigade Combat Team redesignated as Headquarters and Service Company (HSC) 1st Battalion 5th Regiment atCamp Grayling in Waupun. HSC then served with the 7th Infantry Division until September 15 destroyed by Japanese forces during World War II known as Battle of Midway which resulted in United States victory over Japan. In 1948 the military arm of Wisconsin state government was separated from that of Iowa state government and all future military activity within WI state ceased effective October 1st due to this change in policy however honorably discharged members of Iowa army veteran's organizations continued to wear their Iowa veterans dress uniform even after their separation from WI army National Guard

The Waupun Artillery was one of the first artillery batteries in the United States Army. It was organized on October 6, 1795 and served during the War of 1812. The battery was disbanded on December 15, 1814.
Waupun is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, about 25 miles east of Milwaukee and 20 miles north of Appleton. The population was 5,642 at the 2010 census. Waupun is the county seat for Dane County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Waupun were French traders in 1673; they named it "Auburn" after one of their ships that had been wrecked thereabouts on Lake Michigan while trading with the native nations. The first Dutch settlers arrived in 1674 and called it "Waverly". A group of Danish settlers arrived in 1714 and called it "Hedmark", but this name was dropped because of Indian attacks on the settlement during that year. The area now known as Waupun was part of the Potawatomi country until 1836 when all Native Americans were removed from within Wisconsin by treaties negotiated between France, Great Britain, and United States under President James K. Polk's administration. The land around Waupun was donated by Colonel John Custer to be used as an agricultural colony for white men who would settle there; these men built Fort Dearborn (now Appleton) on high ground overlooking the town in 1847 and began to build log cabins, churches, schools, stores, etc., which remain extant to this day. In 1854 Anthony Wayne founded a water-powered flour mill at what is now downtown Waupun and made flour from wheat grown near his mill until 1870 when he switched to corn products using a new process developed by his son-in-law Jacob Perkins (1814-92). In 1908 Anthony Wayne's grandson Harry Wayne bought out Jacob Perkins' share in the mill complex and continued production until 1971 when it closed down due to lack of demand; today only evidence remaining of the mill are two foundations at its site which can be seen from across neighboring townships or roadsides near Interstate 94 exit 169 southbound approaching Racine. During World War II many local veteran families served as military personnel or took up civilian jobs providing essential services such as trucking munitions into Nazi Germany through Operation Crossroads; most notably local mechanic/driver/fireman Ralph Soderlund who worked night shifts driving heavy equipment into restricted areas near Leipzig while living just outside Waupunke on a farmstead owned by his family since before World War I until he was forced out onto public land adjacent to I-94 early one morning in 1944 after refusal by government officials to allow him accesspsible transportation beyond his farmstead for fearful he might reveal information about enemy troop activity located nearby—a situation still facing members of some post-war rural American communities even 50 years later!

In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant offered the services of the 5th United States Infantry Regiment to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The regiment was then redesignated as the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment and sent to fight in the American Civil War. The regiment was eventually mustered out of service in 1868.
Waupun is a small town located in the counties of Milwaukee and Dane in Wisconsin. The population was 5,391 at the 2010 census. Waupun was founded in 1838 by Jacob Hamblin and his wife Anna. It is one of only two towns in Wisconsin which were established before the state's admission into the Union as a United States Territory on July 1, 1847. The town grew rapidly during the early years ofWisconsin's industrial revolution due to its location near natural resources such as coal, lumber, and fish ponds. Waupun also played an important role inially during the American Revolution due to its close proximity to Lake Michigan and its strong military presence. In 1848, General James K. Polk traveled through Waupun on his way to Battle Creek against General Anthony Wayne and discovered that many residents had left for account reasons unrelated to their central government representation or lack thereof. This event helped spur political agitation within Wisconsin over newly acquired territory status and eventually led to Polk becoming president ofthe United States in 1850. In the late 1800s, Waupun began experiencing rapid growth as a result of waves of immigrants coming from eastern Europe seeking work opportunities in what became known as "The Great Migration." Many local businesses took on new names reflecting these newcomers - such as Polish Market Place (later renamed Ukrainian Market), German Village, Hungarian Village, Italian Village - alluding to their various national origins or languages spoken hereabouts.
