The Waunakee Police Department has been providing law enforcement services to the community since 1871. The department is made up of a sworn officer corps, civilians and deputies. The department's mission is to provide quality policing services that protect the citizens of Waunakee and its surrounding communities. In 1871, the Waunakee Police Department was organized as a part of the newly formed Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. At that time, policing in Wisconsin was primarily done by constables and sheriff's deputies who were assisted by private detectives. In 1916, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office amalgamated with other county departments to form the Milwaukee County Police Department. This new police department had an overall staff of 30 officers and patrolled a area totaling 8 miles square. On October 1, 1932, the Waunakee Police Department was established as an independent agency under Mayor John Condon’s leadership. After several years of hard work and dedication by our Officers, on January 1st, 1935 we became operational with our first patrol car! Since then we have grown into one of WI’s most successful Law Enforcement Agencies! We continue to serve our Community throughOfficer safety programs such as DWI checkpoints which are conducted monthly throughout our city limits; Drug unit operation during Lent & Holydays; Gun unit operations during school weeks;and more!

Waunakee is a small town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, located on the banks of the Waukesha River. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Wisconsin Metropolitan Area. The village was laid out in 1837 by General David Dixon and was named for his wife, Waunakee (Creek word meaning "river bank"). A post office called Waunakee was established in 1842, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. At that time, it had a population of two people. The first settler in what is now Waunakee were Methodist missionaries who arrived there from Green Bay in 1847. They built a log cabin on the riverbank which served as their headquarters until 1850 when they erected a more permanent structure known as the Christian Missionary Station. The missionaries continued to live there until 1865 when they moved to Racine and became Racine Chapel Missionaries (later Prairie View A&M University). In 1870, General Dixon donated land to create a village on which Waunakee would be founded. The first settlers arrived with oxen and carts and began to build their homes around 1840-1841. By 1845, however, many residents had already relocated because of bad water conditions caused by high levels of lead resulting from an old minebuster accident nearby; this forced most developers to abandon their plans for development due to loss of interest or financial difficulties. In 1862 Drury bought 8 acres north of present day Main Street for $850 which he used as pastureland for his farm animals; he also built a small house on this property that still stands today. In 1865 Revs John Henson (a Methodist minister) and James Sutherlin purchased land adjoining Drury's property; these men started building what became known as Sutherlin & Henson's Store which housed groceries and other items needed by farmers within walking distance of their home depot where goods were unloaded onto wagons brought into town for sale by merchants such as Jens Madsen (the store's owner) or Moses Kapp (a local blacksmith). In 1870-71 Mr John Pohlman built a gristmill on Mud Creek about one mile east of present day Main Street; this mill produced flour for local consumption along with lumber used for construction purposes including churches and homes close by throughout the early 1800s . Over time various stores developed including: Fries Bros grocery store opened January 1st 1901 at 560 N First St., Mrs Lillian Welch opened her bakery May 1st 1921 at 1100 N Fourth Ave., Harry’s Drug Store opened November 15th 1928 at 2229 South Fourth Avenue, Bebe’s Café open October 3rd 1929 at 530 N First St., finally closed December 14th 1990 after over 50 years located adjacent to Wittners Bakery

In 1882, Waunakee became part of the new Wisconsin Territory after it was organized from portions of Minnesota. The territory included most of northern Minnesota as well as parts of Iowa, Nebraska, and Dakota Territory. In 1890, when the United States acquired all of Canada, Waunakee became part of the newly created Manitoba Province. In 1926, Manitobans voted to make Waunakee their provincial capital. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1951 and 1956 respectively; however they are no longer used today due to declining populations and
