The navy has been a part of the Wisconsin culture for many years. The first ship in Wisconsin was the USS George Washington, which was launched on October 14, 1865. The USS George Washington served as a flagship of the First Fleet during the American Civil War. In 1903, the United States Naval Academy was established at Annapolis, Maryland. The United States Naval Reserve Training Command (NRTC) was activated in 1936 and operates out of Waunakee. In 1978, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which provided for more spending on military programs and made it easier for members of Congress to become naval officers by providing education discounts for NRTC memberships. Waunakee is also home to one of America's largest destroyer arsenals- Destroyer Squadron Five- consisting of ten destroyers and four submarines. Destroyer Squadron Five played a critical role in Operation Neptune's Spear during World War II when they were used to escort vital ships into Norwegian ports before bombing them with aircraft to destruction. Additionally, Destroyer Squadron Five is responsible for PROTECTing U.S maritime interests around the world including guarding against piracy and terrorism; conducting humanitarian missions; and performing Search And Rescue operations when required. Today, Waunakee boasts several Navy Yard facilities that are used by both Coast Guard and Defense Department personnel alike: USNS Bay City (CG 54), USNS Key West (KW 66), USNS Alexandria (LA 92), USNS Valley Forge (VG 40), USN Lake Erieridge (LEC 66) as well as Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune where Marines conduct amphibious assaults ashore while also using Tomahawk Missiles from MCB Camp Lejeune Island Missile Range

The USS Waunakee (LST-174) was a US Navy ship that served in World War II. She was sunk by Japanese forces on 29 July 1945 off the coast of Japan. The LST-174 was one of five ships sank by the Japanese navy during the Battle of Okinawa.
Waunakee is a small town in the far northwest corner of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–Kaukauna, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to view what is now Waunakee was French explorer Jacques Marquette on May 12, 1674. He and three other companions journeyed from Canada into what is now Wisconsin and explored the area for two days before returning home. On July 6, 1779, Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark discovered the mouth of the Kawkawa River and named it after Captain James Cook's flagship HMS " Discovery ". A fur trader by the name of John Jacob Astor founded a post at Waunakee in 1813 and traded with Indians until his death in 1834. In 1836, a group of men led by David Block built a log cabin on land then owned by Solomon Hodgkinson. They called their settlement "Waunakee" after Hodgkinson's farm near present-day Green Bay. In 1840, when Isaac Weiser bought land around Waunakee from Hodgkinson's heirs, he began to erect sawmills and gristmillstones at his farmstead which soon became known as Weiser Manufacturing Company . At that time, only about 10 people lived in Waunakee; most were farmers or workers employed by Weiser Manufacturing Company or related businesses. In 1893, one hundred years after its founding, Waunakee had just over 100 residents when railroad construction began through nearby Kaukauna Township . By 1901 there were over 1200 residents living within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown Waunakee . During World War II , many local citizens volunteered for military service; some worked as truck drivers or mechanics while others served in artillery units or naval vessels . After the war ended in 1945 , many people returned to their homes but continued to use downtown services such as grocery stores and schools until they became available again during economic recession ; this contributed to resurgent growth during the late 1990s and 2000s As recently as 2004 there remained just 25 residents living within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown Waunakee while more than 500 jobs were located within walking distance In recent years efforts have been made to revitalize downtown areas including demolishing abandoned buildings and replacing them with new structures providing retail space Today Downtown Wausau has seen significant redevelopment with new restaurants/bars/lofts/hotels addition along Witham Street which forms an entertainment district called Theblock

The town of Waunakee, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by German immigrants. The name is derived from the Ojibwe word wanaku meaning “place where the water flows” and kae meaning “a place to build a wigwam.” The first settler at Waunakee was Peter Kappeler. Kappeler and his wife, Anna Gottlieb, arrived in 1835 and built a small log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Waunakee. In 1837, they purchased 4 acres of land from David Patterson for $5 per acre. This property became known as Block 1 because it lay at the corner of First and Clyffe Streets. In 1840, John Bringman arrived in Waunakee and erected a wooden frame house on lot #2 which he named Bringman House after himself and his brother-in-law Jacob Bringman (1801-1886). bringman was one of the original incorporators of Waunakee Township on November 3rd, 1847. In 1850, Jonas Sorenson moved to Waunakee from Norway with his family and started a millinery shop called Sorenson Brothers Millinery located on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets. It was here that Anne Hesselius bought her first hat in 1858 from Sorenson’s son John Hesselius (1827-1911). In 1865, James Atherton established an iron works here with assistance from Jens Jensen who had come to America in 1865 as a refugee from Denmark during the Danish Revolution of 1848. Atherton soon became sales manager for Jensen’s company but passed away before any products were produced at the Iron Works plant. His widow continued to operate the factory until she sold it to Grover Cleveland in 1901 for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). After being bought by Cleveland, the business began producingauto parts under the name American Motor Corporation (AMC) until its sale to Japanese automakers Nissan Motors Industries Limited (NMIL) in 1984. At that time, AMC employed over 20 thousand people worldwide including ten thousand workers at its corporate headquarters located on State Capitol Drive near Milwaukee .Waunakee also experienced significant growth during this period with construction projects such as Interlocking Brick Company building on North River Road across street from City Hall which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1830; Park Avenue Bridge replacing an early pedestrian bridge over Menominee Creek; Asphalt Plant completed adjacent to Municipal Building which added much needed jobs during World War I; Electric Light Plant constructed adjacent to Municipal Building serving entire town until 1922 when it went out of service due to vandalism by local teenagers; Post Office opened October 15th 1920 using existing frames built 1909; Water Distribution System installed February 12th 1921 providing municipal water services for all residents within limits subject only thereto since 1889 when river Act authorized Town Board To Drain drained marshland forming present day city block
The first Europeans to visit what is now Waunakee were French traders in the late 1600s. The name "Waunakee" was used by the Winnebago tribe for a place near their trading post on the Wisconsin River. In 1811, Danish fur traders explored and entered Wisconsin from the east, and they named a creek after Waunakee. In 1836, Indian Removal Act forced most of the native people of Wisconsin west into Indian Territory. Some of these people continued to reside in Illinois until 1840 when they all moved to Minnesota. Many of these people are buried at Waunakee National Cemetery. The first sawmill on theWisconsin River was built in 1839 by John Hauser and his brothers-in-law, Jacob Sanger and James Hagerty. By 1860, there were ten mills operating on the river. The industry declined during World War II because of decreased demand for wood products; however, it has since recommenced growth due to tourism opportunities around town as well as new development along the river.
