Waunakee is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The name of the village is also now Waunakee. The original Waunakee village was located on the east side of the current town center. It was founded in 1854 by white settlers from Kentucky and Ohio who named it for their ancestor, Winthrop Waunakee. The first post office opened in 1856. In 1870, residents moved to what is now the south side of town and organized as a village. The first mayor was John Halsey and later Moses Rasmussen served as Mayor from 1875 to 1861 and 1865 to 1879; they were succeeded by Thaddeus Culpston. In 1893, part of what is now downtown Waunakee was built as a housing development called Prairie View Heights. Prairie View Heights became an incorporated municipality in 1907 when its eastern section became detached from Door County and merged into Waukegan Township (now Kane County). In 1916, parts of both townships were combined into one new township called West Side Township (later East Side Township) because much of that area had been annexed by Waukegan since 1915 when Door County lost all but about 2% of its land area to annexation within Indiana State University's newly created Parkland campus boundaries. A year later, South Side Township (later North Side Township) was added to make up for the loss on the east side caused by World War I which closed most agricultural areas west of Chicago along Route 66 and other arterial routes including those running through downtowns like Milwaukee and Racine

Waunakee, Wisconsin is a small town in the Ozaukee County of south central Wisconsin. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name Waunakee is known to its residents as "The Pocahontas". The first settler in what later became Waunakee Township was James Stephenson in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Menomonee River. A post office called Stephenson was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it ceased operations in 1902. In 1853, John A. Folsom settled near present-day Waunakee and began to cultivate corn and other vegetables on his farmstead which he named Prairie du Chien after then-President George Washington's home state of Pennsylvania (Folsom also served as one of two assessors for Ozaukee County). In 1861, Folsom sold his land to James Sennett who erected a house thereon and called it Waunakee House. In 1865, James Ritchie moved from Manitowoc to join Sennett at Waunakee House; they continued to live there until their deaths in 1925 and 1929 respectively. In 1892, David Leland bought 640 acres (248 hectares) around present-day downtown Waunakee from J C Vail for $2,000; this tract became known as Leland Ranch after him. With this purchase came much importance because it gave Leland control over alluvial soil along most of today's east side streets between Menomonee Falls Road (now Milwaukee Avenue) and Spring Street within only a few miles of downtown Milwaukee proper - making him one of the earliest agriculturalists presence on that side of town since European settlement here began more than three centuries earlier! At various times during its history Waunakeee has been referred to as "the Junction", "The Settlement", or simply "Waukeem". On July 8th, 1907 an actorganized by territorial governor Edwin Drake created Racine County consisting largely out west including parts now located within Oconomowoc County; with headquarters at Racine original county courthouse still extant on North Main Street within city limits today following fire destruction by tornado damage wrought by EF5 tornado Sept 3 1950 . That same year saw groundbreaking for what would become Racine Municipal Airport when main runway southeast thereof was dedicated becoming first municipally owned airport anywhere IN THE UNITED STATES! By 1930s almost all manufacturing had shifted from downtown WI & neighboring towns towards Racine due to cheap labor available here starting WW2 !! loss suffered due thereto directly& indirectly through population growth: some 3 million people moving into WI during 30 years!!!!!!
