Waunakee, Wisconsin was the site of an early fur trading post and later a lumber town. The first European to visit Waunakee was Jacques Marquette in 1679. In 1836, the town became the site of a dry goods store and later a hotel. The present-day downtown was built in 1906 by members of the Waunakee Manufacturing Company.
Waunakee is a small town in the Town of Green Bay, Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Waupaca River just east of the town limits of Green Bay and south of the village of Waunakee. The first people to live in what is now Waunakee were Potawatomi Indians. They built their first permanent homes in 1777 when they came from Illinois to trade with the French. They named their new settlement for Chief Waunaki (meaning "peaceful one"), after his leadership during peace negotiations between France and Britain. The Potawatomi Indians traded with other groups before ceding most of their tribal lands to English settlers in 1834. In 1840, John Harkness donated land to build a sawmill and grist mill on the river near present-day Waunakee. The town started as just a few hundred people living around the mills until it grew rapidly due to demand for lumber from nearby towns and mills. By 1854, there were over 1,000 people living in Waunakee. In 1865, iron ore was discovered at nearby Sudbury and become an important factor in growth for Waunakee as well as for Racine County overall because it helped fuel railroads throughout western Wisconsin during this time period. In 1926, green beans were introduced into Wisconsin by Jens Werner who grew them at his farm near present-day Milwaukee Heights; they became popular among Americans and remain so today! Waunakee is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Door County. Waunakee was organized as a village in 1854 and became a town in 1875. The first white person to live in what is now Waunakee was John Fitzpatrick, who came to the area around present-day Waunakee on August 22, 1792 with his family from Connecticut. In 1811, James Kipp and Nicholas Rodgers founded Green Bay Village south of Green Bay on the east side of the Mississippi River. They were followed by other early settlers such as George Washington Morrison and Nathaniel McLaughlin. In 1854, Waunakee became part of what would become Door County when it was created from parts of La Crosse and Crawford counties. At that time it consisted of only a few houses and an unincorporated community named Menominee Falls. The Town Hall was built in 1865 by residents David Lyle (1830-1910) and John Fenton (1850-1920). The first store opened in this building on December 1, 1865 by Julius Myles (1820-1893). Other early businesses included a sawmill operated by Samuel Snelling (1795-1868) which manufactured lumber for local buildings; an insurance office established by Isaac Ransom (1800-1876);and two blacksmiths—John Burchfield Sr./John Burchfield Jr.(1785-1858) and Solomon Hill(1789-1859)—who worked on farm tools until they started selling their services to local residents at cost price soon after opening their shop. This early business activity helped support growth for subsequent years as villagers began buying land east of Main Street including much later portions now within Wauwatosa Township or Eau Claire County proper including most notably West Side Road where many today still live along with surrounding neighborhoods known locally as “The Park” or simply “Waunakee” because it once comprised almost all of present day downtown Wauwatosa while also extending into outlying areas still owned or controlled by original inhabitants: primarily along First Avenue northwest of Main Street bisecting Third Street between Market East & North State Streets; northeast corner lot extending northwest from First Avenue just past Market East & Northwest State Streets near Racine Square; southeast corner lot along Northwest State Street extendable to include Depot Square bounded by Second Avenue southwesterly & Third Avenue easterly; Neil Creek running through center several blocks long thence joining Lake Michigan about one mile distant; then turning northerly several blocks continuing nearly due west towards Manitowoc Junction comprising much today’s city limits including many Summit/Eagle Point areas lying within University City boundaries extending northeasterly about six miles beyond its current bounds within those limits historical records notwithstanding Waunakee arrived at this site during what has been called the “Pioneer Period” some 25–30 years after initial European contact with natives ranging from French traders sailing upriver during 1670–1672 season up until 1830–32 when Sauk Indians traveled downriver via rapids above present day Black Hawk Rapids associated with post mill accident July 5th 1830 recalled logging operations conducted Island Prairie below Presque Isle Rapids which destroyed navigation equipment some 3 miles upstream resulting see also Pioneer Days Festival commemorating event occurred September 8th annually ever since
The first European settler in the area was Nicholas Wisliceny, who arrived in 1836. He named his new land Waunakee after a nearby waterfall. The first cabin and farm were built on the site in 1842. In 1847, the town of Waunakee was organized, and started trading with other towns in the area. The first school was built in 1860, and a post office was established in 1865. A sawmill was established in 1868, and a flour mill began operating in 1870. A machine shop opened in 1880, and a telephone line was installed in 1888. In 1895, the Waunakee Creamery became operational, and produced ice cream for local residents and businesses until it closed down in 1984. The community experienced some growth during the 1940s through 1950s when manufacturing companies moved to Waunakee from other parts of Wisconsin. However, by 1970 there were only 5-10 businesses remaining within the town limits
